All trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is a potent inducer of differentiation of HL‐60 cell line. The pretreatment of the cells by compactin, a competitive inhibitor of 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl (HMG) CoA reductase, during 24 hours, enhances the ATRA‐induced cell differentiation.

Fetal growth restriction is associated with placental metabolic adaptations. In small‐for‐gestational‐age placenta (SGA), cholesterol receptors and steroidogenic enzymes are upregulated, enhancing steroidogenesis. NAD salvage pathway is also increased to support NADP+/NADPH requirements.

The mevalonate pathway accounts for conversion of acetyl-CoA to isopentenyl 5-diphosphate, the versatile precursor of polyisoprenoid metabolites and natural products. The pathway functions in most eukaryotes, archaea, and some eubacteria. Only recently has much of the functional and structural basis for this metabolism been reported.
