Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

The effect of plasma welding and carbides presence on the occurrence of cracks and micro-cracks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Presented in this paper is the effect of plasma welding (hardfacing) and carbides presence on the occurrence of cracks and micro-cracks in the welded layer. The reasons behind this phenomenon were analyzed and explained.

Influences of drying-wetting-freeze-thaw cycles on soil-water and shrinkage characteristics of expansive soil

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao, 2021
The effects of freeze-thaw (FT), drying-wetting (DW) and alternative drying-wetting-freeze-thaw (DWFT) cycles on the micro-structure, soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) and soil shrinkage characteristic curve (SSCC) of a compacted expansive soil are ...

Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Alumina: Effects of Scanning Strategies on External and Internal Defects

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates how scanning strategies affect pure alumina in laser powder bed fusion. Linear 45° scanning yields uniform surfaces but high porosity, while the island‐concentric strategy provides higher density with through‐holes favorable for infiltration. Findings highlight pathways toward optimizing defect‐free alumina parts.

Evaluation of dynamic behaviour of porous media including micro-cracks by ordinary state-based peridynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Reliable evaluation of mechanical response in a porous solid might be challenging without any simplified assumptions. Peridynamics (PD) perform very well on a medium including pores owing to its definition, which is valid for entire domain regardless of ...

Micro-mechanical behaviors of granite under cyclic heating/cooling conditions investigated by GBM3D

open access: yesGeomechanics and Geophysics for Geo-Energy and Geo-Resources
During the exploitation of hot dry rock, the surface of the convective heat transfer channel undergoes repeated cycles of heating and cooling. Investigating the microstructure of granite after such cyclic thermal treatments is crucial for ensuring the ...

Repair of concrete existing micro-cracks by use of microbially induced carbonate precipitation

open access: yes, 2023
Micro-crack is the start of concrete deterioration and failure, though it does not decrease the bearing capacity in the beginning. In order to prolong the service life of existing concrete structures, it is important to repair the existing micro-cracks ...
