Microbial indication of pollution in the surface waters of Peter the Great Bay (Japan Sea) by heavy metals

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО
Water quality is assessed in some coastal areas of Peter the Great Bay, Japan Sea, by means of microbial indication. In the areas polluted with heavy metals, the number of metal-resistant forms of bacteria in heterotrophic microbial communities varies in

Differentiation of Toxic Molds via Headspace SPME-GC/MS and Canine Detection

open access: yesSensors, 2007
Indoor mold growth has recently become a concern in the legal world in regards to insurance litigation. Hazardous mold exposure to humans has been linked to many acute and chronic adverse health effects including death. As it grows, mold produces several

Links between soil microbial communities and plant traits in a species-rich grassland under long-term climate change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Climate change can influence soil microorganisms directly by altering their growth and activity but also indirectly via effects on the vegetation, which modifies the availability of resources.

Authigenic Greigite as an Indicator of Methane Diffusion in Gas Hydrate-Bearing Sediments of the Hikurangi Margin, New Zealand

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2021
Authigenic ferrimagnetic iron sulfides, essentially greigite (Fe3S4), are commonly found in gas hydrate-bearing marine sediments of active accretionary prisms.

SARS-CoV-2 Monitoring in Wastewater Reveals Novel Variants and Biomarkers of Infection

open access: yesViruses, 2022
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a popular tool for the early indication of community spread of infectious diseases. WBE emerged as an effective tool during the COVID-19 pandemic and has provided meaningful information to minimize the spread of ...

DSA to grow electrochemically active biofilms of Geobacter sulfurreducens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Biofilms of Geobacter sulfurreducens were grown on graphite and on dimensionally stable anodes (DSA) in medium that did not contain any soluble electron acceptor.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Exploratory analysis of excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra with self-organizing maps as a basis for determination of organic matter removal efficiency at water treatment works [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In the paper, the self-organizing map (SOM) was employed for the exploratory analysis of fluorescence excitation-emission data characterizing organic matter removal efficiency at 16 water treatment works in the UK.

Microbial indicators in natural biofilms developed in the riverbed

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2010
Microbial indicators such as heterotrophic bacteria, total coliforms, and Escherichia coli in naturally developed riverbed biofilms were investigated. Pebbles covered with natural biofilm were sampled directly from the riverbed at sampling stations ranging from the upstream region within a quasi-national park to the midstream in the urban district ...
