Managing emerging pathogen risks in recycled water [PDF]
The COVID-19 pandemic raised the public profile of wastewater-based infectious disease monitoring. General media coverage about wastewater detection of SARS-CoV-2 (the COVID-19 coronavirus) increased community awareness of the potential use of wastewater

The use of modelling and probabilistic methods in cumulative risk assessment [PDF]
This thesis was realized as part of the EU integrated project SAFE FOODS, the overall objective of which was to change the scope of decision-making on food safety from single risks to considering foods as sources of risks, benefits and costs associated ...

Photo‐Switchable Molecular Module Programming PET Biodegradation in Aquatic Environments
We address the plastic durability paradox by integrating an itaconic acid–derived pyrrolidone module into polymer backbones. Sunlight in water triggers Norrish Type I ring‐opening and hydrophilization, enabling rapid biodegradation into nontoxic minerals.

The Application of Internal Dose Measures, Biokinetics, and Biomonitoring Data in the Risk Assessment of Dioxin-Like Compounds [PDF]
This thesis presents a series of investigations into the biokinetic behavior of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and related compounds and the application of biokinetic modeling and biomonitoring data in quantitative risk assessment for these ...

Rare‐Earth–Functionalized Carbon Dot Hydrogels as Mechanically Robust Antibacterial Wound Dressings
The schematic depicts a dynamically cross‐linked PVA hydrogel network in which reversible borate ester bonds and hydrogen‐bonding interactions integrate lanthanum‐doped carbon dots (La‐CDs) and dipotassium glycyrrhizinate (DPG) to form a mechanically robust, multifunctional matrix.

Modeling Food Spoilage in Microbial Risk Assessment
In this study, I describe a systematic approach for modeling food spoilage in microbial risk assessment that is based on the incorporation of kinetic spoilage modeling in exposure assessment by combining data and models for the specific spoilage organisms (SSO: fraction of the total microflora responsible for spoilage) with those for pathogens.

Uncertainties in risk assessment of dioxin-like compounds : A focus on systemic relative potencies and species differences [PDF]
This thesis describes experimental work undertaken to reduce uncertainties in the risk assessment of dioxin-like compounds. The toxic equivalency factor (TEF) approach is the most commonly used method for assessing the risk of complex mixtures of dioxin ...
