Drinking Water Quality Regulations: A Contrast Between Germany and Latin America
ABSTRACT This article investigates the differences among drinking water quality standards adopted in Latin American countries, Mexico, Cuba, and the European Union, considering the growing challenge of ensuring safe drinking water in a context marked by environmental pressures, climate change, and the occurrence of emerging contaminants. The study aims

Recreational exposure during algal bloom in carrasco beach, uruguay: A liver failure case report [PDF]
In January 2015, a 20-month-old child and her family took part in recreational activities at Carrasco and Malvín beaches (Montevideo, Uruguay). An intense harmful algae bloom (HAB) was developing along the coast at that time.

This study investigated future operational costs in water treatment (WT) plants. Random forest modeling projected 3–5 times more abundant cyanobacteria by 2100 due to climate change. Increased microcystins demanded substantially more activated carbon and, as a result, WT costs could rise to $6–22/household/month.

Mitochondria a key role in microcystin‐LR kidney intoxication [PDF]
AbstractMicrocystins (MCs) are a group of closely related cyclic heptapeptides produced by a variety of common cyanobacteria. These toxins have been implicated in both human and livestock mortality. Microcystin‐LR could affect renal physiology by altering vascular, glomerular and urinary parameters, indicating that MC‐LR could act directly on the ...

Safety evaluation of blue galdieria extract as a food additive
Abstract The EFSA Panel on Food Additive and Flavourings (FAF Panel) provides a scientific opinion on the safety of blue galdieria extract as a food additive. Blue galdieria extract is an enzymatically treated C‐phycocyanin extract derived from the lysed biomass of the microalgae Galdieria sulphuraria.

Microcystin-LR in surface water of Ponjavica river
Background/Aim. Cyanobacterial toxins befall a group of various compounds according to chemical structure and health effects on people and animals. The most significant in this large group of compounds are microcystins. Their presence in water used for human consumption causes serious health problems, liver beeing the target organ ...

Toxicity of microcystins in the isolated hepatocytes of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) [PDF]
The toxicity of hepatotoxic microcystins produced mainly by Microcystis aeruginosa in mammals and fishes was well studied in recent years. However, there were scarcely reports in toxic effects of microcystins on isolated hepatocytes of fishes, especially
