Hybrid Integration of Magnetoresistive Sensors with MEMS as a Strategy to Detect Ultra-Low Magnetic Fields

open access: yesMicromachines, 2016
In this paper, we describe how magnetoresistive sensors can be integrated with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices enabling the mechanical modulation of DC or low frequency external magnetic fields to high frequencies using MEMS structures ...

Of Some Theoretical Significance: Implications of Casimir Effects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
In his autobiography Casimir barely mentioned the Casimir effect, but remarked that it is "of some theortical significance." We will describe some aspects of Casimir effects that appear to be of particular significance now, more than half a century after

Photon Avalanching Nanoparticles: The Next Generation of Upconverting Nanomaterials?

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Perspective outlines the mechanistic foundations that enable photon‐avalanche (PA) behavior in lanthanide nanomaterials and contrasts them with emerging application spaces and forward‐looking design strategies. By bridging threshold engineering, energy‐transfer dynamics, and materials engineering, we provide a coherent roadmap for advancing the ...

Novel Microelectromechanical Systems Image Reversal Fabrication Process Based on Robust SU-8 Masking Layers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper discusses a novel fabrication process that uses a combination of negative and positive photoresists with positive tone photomasks, resulting in masking layers suitable for bulk micromachining high-aspect ratio microelectromechanical systems ...

Materials selection and design of microelectrothermal bimaterial actuators

open access: yes, 2007
A common form of MEMS actuator is a thermally actuated bimaterial, which is easy to fabricate by surface micromachining and permits out of plane actuation, which is otherwise difficult to achieve.

Fabrication of 3D Carbon Microelectromechanical Systems (C-MEMS) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Visualized Experiments, 2017
A wide range of carbon sources are available in nature, with a variety of micro-/nanostructure configurations. Here, a novel technique to fabricate long and hollow glassy carbon microfibers derived from human hairs is introduced. The long and hollow carbon structures were made by the pyrolysis of human hair at 900 °C in a N2 atmosphere.

A Colloidal Quantum Dot Thermistor and Bolometer

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces colloidal quantum dot thermistors employing a potential barrier structure to tune the activation energy of transport and hence the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR). Upon integration with plasmonic absorbers, the CQD‐based bolometer device enables room‐temperature wavelength‐selective photodetection across the mid‐ to ...

Subnanometer Translation of Microelectromechanical Systems Measured by Discrete Fourier Analysis of CCD Images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
—In-plane linear displacements of microelectromechanical systems are measured with subnanometer accuracy by observing the periodic micropatterns with a charge-coupled device camera attached to an optical microscope.
