The effect of friction on micropitting

open access: yesWear, 2022
Abstract Micropitting is a type of surface fatigue damage that occurs in rolling-sliding contacts operating under thin oil film conditions. It is caused by stress fluctuations, brought about by surface asperity interactions, which lead to initiation and propagation of numerous surface fatigue cracks and subsequent loss of material.

A Review on Micropitting Studies of Steel Gears [PDF]

open access: yesCoatings, 2019
With the mounting application of carburized or case-hardening gears and higher requirements of heavy-load, high-speed in mechanical systems such as wind turbines, helicopters, ships, etc., contact fatigue issues of gears are becoming more preponderant.

A Novel Method for automatic detection of incipient micropitting in ground surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesTribology International, 2021
Micropitting is a surface fatigue phenomenon, on the scale of the surface roughness, which can be a significant problem in heavily loaded mixed lubrication contacts in power transmission gearing. Modern surface profilometry equipment allows detailed areal measurements of micropitted surfaces to be obtained.

Influence of dumbbell base oil blends on micropitting

open access: yesTribology International, 2023
Micropitting is a type of surface fatigue that occurs in rolling-sliding contacts. It results from stress fluctuations caused by surface asperity interactions. Both the number and severity of asperity interactions increase at low lambda ratios, so it is becoming a significant challenge to develop low viscosity lubricants for gears and rolling bearings ...

Influence of ZDDP tribofilm on micropitting formation and progression

open access: yesTribology International
This paper presents insights into how Zinc Dialkyl Dithiophosphate (ZDDP) influences the formation and progression of micropitting. Experimental investigations were conducted using a twin-disc tribometer in rolling-sliding contacts under mixed or boundary lubrication conditions, focusing on the impact of ZDDP on micropitting in bearing steel samples ...

Computational Methods for Detection of Microgeometry Changes in Tribological Surfaces

open access: yesTribology Online, 2022
In the modelling and characterization of changes undergone by engineering surfaces from tribological processes, an automatic detection system is often required to minimize subjective elements of the assessment in the analysis.

Understanding micropitting in gears [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2015
Micropitting is a serious form of erosive wear, which can occur on the teeth of transmission gears. It is associated with roughness effects and surface fatigue and has become a particular problem in the speed-increasing gearboxes of wind turbines. This paper reviews the contributions which the authors have made towards an understanding of the basic ...

The Influence of Material Roughness, Hardness and Lubricant Additives on Micropitting Behaviour in Rolling-Sliding Contacts

open access: yesTribology Online, 2020
Regarding micropitting, which is one of the fatigue damages that occur under conditions where the oil film thickness is smaller than the surface roughness, the effects of hardness and roughness of the test piece and differences in lubricants were ...

Increasing the load carrying capacity of highly loaded gears by nitriding [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2019
Nitriding is a common heat treatment process for highly loaded gears. A very hard compound layer with a thickness of a few microns is produced at the surface of the gear.

Influence of the Machining Process on the Service Life and Pitting Morphology of Gear-Tooth Surfaces

open access: yesMetals, 2022
Pitting, which results from contact fatigue, is a common failure mode in gear transmission systems and is influenced by the material strength and stress state of the contact area, which is further influenced by lubrication and roughness because of stress
