Depolymerization of Polycotton-Blended Fabrics: Challenges and Opportunities. [PDF]

open access: yesChemSusChem
The increasing production of cotton/polyethylene terephthalate (PET)‐blended textiles and the limitations of traditional recycling highlight the need for innovative strategies. This minireview explores pretreatments, chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis to selectively recover glucose, terephthalic acid, and ethylene glycol, enabling their reuse in ...

Management of Instrument Sterilization Workflow in Endodontics: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Dent, 2020
Endodontic treatment consists of different working procedures, such as the isolation of the operating field, pulp chamber access, and cleaning and shaping phases with at last the need of a three‐dimensional filling of the canals. Each step requires a series of single‐use or sterilizable instruments.

Resistance to Cyclic Fatigue of Nickel-Titanium Files Immersed in Sodium Hypochlorite at Body Temperature. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Dent, 2020
Background/purpose. To assess the resistance to cyclic fatigue (CF) displayed by two nickel‐titanium (NiTi) files, One Curve (OC) and ProTaper Gold (PTG), after their immersion in 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution at body temperature. Materials and Methods.

On the definition and effect of optimum gear microgeometry modifications for the gearbox of an offshore 10‐MW wind turbine

open access: yesWind Energy, Volume 26, Issue 7, Page 717-740, July 2023., 2023
Abstract This work develops an optimization algorithm for the definition of gear microgeometry modifications (MGM) on a gearbox belonging to an offshore 10‐MW wind turbine. Subsequently, the impact of the gear microgeometry on the performance of gears and bearings is quantified: First, under rated load conditions and, second, accounting for the ...

Ancient mitochondrial genomes recovered from small vertebrate bones through minimally destructive DNA extraction: Phylogeography of the New Zealand gecko genus Hoplodactylus

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 11, Page 2964-2984, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Methodological and technological improvements are continually revolutionizing the field of ancient DNA. Most ancient DNA extraction methods require the partial (or complete) destruction of finite museum specimens, which disproportionately impacts small or fragmentary subfossil remains, and future analyses.

It is time for ancient DNA to sweat the small stuff

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 11, Page 2689-2691, June 2023., 2023
When one thinks of the field of ancient DNA it conjures images of extinct megafauna, from mammoths and woolly rhinos, through to the giant, flightless elephant bird (but hopefully not dinosaurs – despite the pervasive idea of ‘dino DNA’ from Jurassic park). These taxa have fascinating evolutionary histories, and their extinction stories need to be told.

Electrochemical polarization behavior and superelastic properties of a Fe–Mn–Al–Ni–Cr shape memory alloy

open access: yesMaterials and Corrosion, Volume 74, Issue 3, Page 441-451, March 2023., 2023
The addition of a small amount of chromium (1.5 at%) to the Fe–Mn–Al–Ni shape memory alloy results in very good properties that are comparable to those of the initial alloy. Furthermore, the addition of chromium generally improves corrosion resistance by increasing the resistance to localized corrosion. A single crystalline condition shows an enhanced,

Influencing the Hydrogen Porosity in Aluminum Casting by (Re)active Filter Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2022., 2022
Herein, the influence of active and reactive filter materials on hydrogen porosity in aluminum castings is shown. The use of spodumene as new reactive filter material contributes to a reduction of porosity in the castings. The research is part of the collaborative research center CRC920, which deals with the developing multifunctional filters for metal

Fatigue Failure Analysis of a Gear in Automobile Engine Coolant Pump

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Gear is a reliable part of power transmission. This article presents a metallurgical failure analysis of a failed gear used in automobile engine coolant pumps. In gear, the soft microstructure of pearlite and ferrite is witnessed in metallographic analysis.
