An Overview of Seasonal Changes in Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Defence Parameters in Some Invertebrate and Vertebrate Species

open access: yesScientifica, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Antioxidant defence system, a highly conserved biochemical mechanism, protects organisms from harmful effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS), a by‐product of metabolism. Both invertebrates and vertebrates are unable to modify environmental physical factors such as photoperiod, temperature, salinity, humidity, oxygen content, and food availability as ...

Gastrointestinal Helminth Parasites Community of Fish Species in a Niger Delta Tidal Creek, Nigeria

open access: yesJournal of Ecosystems, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
A pool of fish species in a Niger Delta tidal creek, Buguma Creek, Nigeria, collected monthly from November 2004 to June 2006, at flood tides, were examined for gastrointestinal helminth parasites. The fish species were caught with hooks and lines and cast nets. Only nematode parasites were encountered in the study. Of the 1,149 fish specimens examined,

Distribution of Micropogonias furnieri (Pisces: Sciaenidae) in Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

open access: yesRevista de biologia tropical, 2002
Distribution of Micropogonias furnieri in the Sepetiba Bay, an ecosystem highly important as rearing ground for this species that represents 5.8% of the numerical catches by otter trawling, was analyzed based in monthly and bi-monthly samplings from two programmes (beach seines = continental margin; and otter trawl = inside of the Bay), over three ...

Assessing Fish Community Structure and Diversity Across Environmental Gradients in a Tropical Bay

open access: yesMarine Ecology, Volume 46, Issue 2, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Understanding the relationship between species distribution and the environment across spatial gradients is crucial for biodiversity evaluation. We surveyed fish populations in a tropical bay, covering a spatial gradient from the outer zone with favorable marine conditions to the inner zone affected by human activities.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Salmonella enterica isolates in fish species captured from the Lagoa dos Patos estuary

open access: yesSemina: Ciências Agrárias, 2016
Microorganisms that cause human diseases can contaminate fishes in aquatic environments as well as during their capture, handling, and transport. The purpose of this study was to isolate Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Salmonella enterica from fishes ...

Influence of wind events on the transport of early stages of Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823) to a subtropical estuary

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2019
As all coastal environments, the Patos Lagoon Estuary (PLE) is an important habitat for the early stages of the life cycle of many marine organisms.

Hyperostosis in Fishes: An Update With New Species Records

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 285, Issue 11, November 2024.
Hyperostosis is an enigmatic dimension of diversity in the anatomy of fishes. This excessive overgrowth of bone is natural in origin, occurs almost exclusively in marine fishes, is generally species‐specific, and becomes fully developed only in large individuals. We document hyperostosis in 35 families, 89 genera, and 153 species.

Aplicación de la ley de Benford a la pesquería argentina de corvina rubia (Micropogonias furnieri)

open access: yesMarine and Fishery Sciences (MAFIS)
En el ámbito de los datos estadísticos, tanto en las ciencias naturales como sociales, se ha observado que la distribución de los primeros, segundos y dos primeros dígitos en datos reales sigue frecuentemente un patrón conocido como la “ley de Benford ...
