Opportunities to incorporate mine closure into mine planning

open access: yes, 2015
Most early mine operations did not include closure planning. When closing an abandoned mine, operators are faced with all of the problems that have been left, for example, old equipment and structures, contamination, unstable landforms and a lack of soil

Critical role of risk management in ground engineering and opportunities for improvement

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mining Science and Technology, 2017
Green mining is concerned with mining in a sustainable manner, such that the needs of the present are met without compromising future generations. The achievement of this objective depends on balancing social, environmental and economic objectives and ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Bell Mine closure plan

open access: yes, 1994
A comprehensive Closure Plan was developed for the Bell Mine which ensured minimal post-closure environmental impacts and public safety. Since much of the information required to develop closure scenarios was not available, a major task in the ...

Planning for early mine closure

open access: yes, 2011
Several mining companies operating in Brazil have been preparing mine closure plans describing end of life actions to ensure long term physical stability, land rehabilitation and, to a certain extent, socioeconomic measures.

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Social impacts of mine closure : engaging employees and host communities in planning for closure

open access: yes, 2015
Planning for mine closure usually focuses on a detailed reclamation plan designed by experts to mitigate environmental impacts; however, less is known about the social aspects of mine closure and how to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of closing a ...

Integrating water and energy solutions for socio-economic transition after mine closure

open access: yesGlobal Sustainability
Non-technical summary Mining activities have intensive water and energy needs that require reliable infrastructure for ongoing supply. In several jurisdictions, regulations require mining companies to clear all service infrastructure as part of closure ...
