Restricting dietary sodium promotes sodium appetite in rats. Prolonged sodium restriction increases plasma potassium (pK), and elevated pK is largely responsible for a concurrent increase in aldosterone, which helps promote sodium appetite.

Repression of the Glucocorticoid Receptor Aggravates Acute Ischemic Brain Injuries in Adult Mice. [PDF]
Strokes are one of the leading causes of mortality and chronic morbidity in the world, yet with only limited successful interventions available at present.

Aldosterone Blocks Rat Stem Leydig Cell Development In Vitro
Aldosterone (ALDO) is a primary endogenous mineralocorticoid, appearing as the main hormone controlling sodium and water homeostasis. Its emerging role in the development of many organs has gained interest over the past few years.

Hypertension in mice lacking 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 [PDF]
Deficiency of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2) in humans leads to the syndrome of apparent mineralocorticoid excess (SAME), in which cortisol illicitly occupies mineralocorticoid receptors, causing sodium retention, hypokalemia, and ...

Nuclear receptors in vascular biology [PDF]
Nuclear receptors sense a wide range of steroids and hormones (estrogens, progesterone, androgens, glucocorticoid, and mineralocorticoid), vitamins (A and D), lipid metabolites, carbohydrates, and xenobiotics.

The Inositol- 1,4,5=Trisphosphate System Is Involved in Rapid Effects of Aldosterone in Human Mononuclear Leukocytes [PDF]
There is increasing evidence for rapid steroid action on electrolyte transport in human mononuclear leukocytes (HML). In HML, aldosterone stimulates the Na+/H+ antiporter within a few minutes. Because a variety of hormones and growth factors activate the

Eight weeks of mineralocorticoid blockade does not improve insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes
Individuals with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A correlation between plasma aldosterone and hyperinsulinemia has been demonstrated in vivo, and hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance are independently associated with ...

Comparison of different strategies to measure medication adherence via claims data in patients with chronic heart failure [PDF]
Medication adherence correlates with morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), but is difficult to assess. We conducted a retrospective methodological cohort study in 3,808 CHF patients, calculating adherence as proportion of ...
