Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

In Vitro Activity of Vancomycin and Teicoplanin Against Coagulase Negative Staphylococci

open access: yesOman Medical Journal, 2011
Objectives: With the increase in nosocomial infections caused by coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS), laboratory diagnosis of CNS with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides (vancomycin and teicoplanin) has become important.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentrations and lethality in Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia [PDF]

open access: yesGERMS, 2015
After the dissemination of penicillin and oxacillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-intermediate and vancomycin resistant isolates have been reported. Even between isolates with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) within the susceptible range, some authors have demonstrated that higher MICs correlate with higher lethality. To test ...

Minimum inhibitory concentration of rifampin, rifabutin, and isoniazid

open access: yes, 2022
The minimum inhibitory concentration of rifampin, rifabutin, and isoniazid among multidrug-resistant (MDR), rifampin-resistant (RR), and isoniazid (INH) resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolate stratified by line probe assay result.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Minimum inhibitory concentration distribution in environmental Legionella spp. isolates [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Water and Health, 2014
In Greece standard tests are performed in the watering and cooling systems of hotels’ units either as part of the surveillance scheme or following human infection. The purpose of this study was to establish the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) distributions of environmental Legionella isolates for six antimicrobials commonly used for the ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
