Unit of analysis issues in laboratory-based research

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Many studies in the biomedical research literature report analyses that fail to recognise important data dependencies from multilevel or complex experimental designs.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

lmerTest Package: Tests in Linear Mixed Effects Models

open access: yesJournal of Statistical Software, 2017
One of the frequent questions by users of the mixed model function lmer of the lme4 package has been: How can I get p values for the F and t tests for objects returned by lmer?

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

MODELOS Y ANÁLISIS PARA DATOS DE DEGRADACIÓN MODELOS Y ANÁLISIS PARA DATOS DE DEGRADACIÓN

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Estadística, 2003
Degradation is a weakness that eventually can cause failure (e.g. car tire wear). When it is possible to measure degradation, such measures often provide more information than failure-time data for purposes of assessing and improving product reliability.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Mixed Effects Analysis of Height Growth in Ethiopian Children Aged 1-12 Years: A Cohort Study

open access: yesEast African Journal of Biophysical and Computational Sciences
Modelling physical growth is a key component to examine and identify definingcharacteristics in the growth process. The goal of this study was to model and captureknown features of height growth in Ethiopian children aged 1–12 years.

Lack-of-fit tests in semiparametric mixed models. [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper we obtain the asymptotic distribution of restricted likelihood ratio tests in mixed linear models with a fixed and finite number of random effects.

Cosmic rays and the emission line regions of active galactic nuclei [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
The effects that the synchrotron emitting relativistic electrons could have on the emission line regions which characterize active nuclei are discussed. Detailed models of both the inner, dense, broad line region and the outer, lower density, narrow line

Controlling for individual heterogeneity in longitudinal models, with applications to student achievement

open access: yes, 2007
Longitudinal data tracking repeated measurements on individuals are highly valued for research because they offer controls for unmeasured individual heterogeneity that might otherwise bias results.
