Tracer Transport within Abyssal Mixing Layers [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2019
AbstractMixing layers near sloped topography in the abyss are thought to play a critical role in the global overturning circulation. Yet the behavior of passive tracers within sloping boundary layer systems has received little attention, despite the extensive use of tracer observations to understand abyssal circulation.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Effects of Density Stratification on Mixing Enhancement by Shock Wave in Supersonic Shear Layer Flows

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2014
We analyze the response of passive mixing to shock wave in a density-stratified supersonic shear layer by means of direct numerical simulation with a high-order hybrid compact-WENO scheme.

Chain-Branching Explosions in Mixing Layers [PDF]

open access: yesSIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1999
The chain-branching process leading to ignition in the high-temperature hydrogen-oxygen mixing layer is studied by application of a novel WKB-like method when, as is typically the case, two branching radicals cannot be assumed to maintain steady state.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Implications of Stably Stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layer Turbulence on the Near-Wake Structure of Wind Turbines

open access: yesEnergies, 2014
Turbulence structure in the wake behind a full-scale horizontal-axis wind turbine under the influence of real-time atmospheric inflow conditions has been investigated using actuator-line-model based large-eddy-simulations.

A Generalized Mixing Length Closure for Eddy‐Diffusivity Mass‐Flux Schemes of Turbulence and Convection

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
Because of their limited spatial resolution, numerical weather prediction and climate models have to rely on parameterizations to represent atmospheric turbulence and convection.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Absolute and convective instabilities in an inviscid compressible mixing layer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We consider the stability of a compressible shear flow separating two streams of different speeds and temperatures. The velocity and temperature profiles in this mixing layer are hyperbolic tangents.
