Identification of Modal Damping Ratios for a Simplified Wind Turbine Tower Using Fourier Analysis

Volume 1: 20th Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, Parts A, B, and C, 2005
This paper presents an approach to evaluate the modal damping ratios for a simplified wind turbine tower, using Fourier analysis and linear regression. The model proposed for the wind turbine tower is composed of a flexible tower and rotor blade system, inter-connected using a sub-structuring technique, which facilitates the rotating blade/tower ...

Towards a seismic design method for plane steel frames using equivalent modal damping ratios

Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 2010
A method for seismic design of plane steel moment resisting frames based on the use of equivalent modal damping ratios is developed. The method determines the design base shear of the structure through spectrum analysis using rationally obtained equivalent modal damping ratios instead of the crude strength reduction (behavior) factor.

Calculation on Modal Damping Ratio of Stay Cable Using Nonlinear Friction Damper

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
Stay cables of long span cable-stayed bridges are easy to vibrate under wind or wind/rain loads owning to their very low inherent damping. To install cable dampers near to the anchorages of cable has become a common practice for cable vibration control of cable-stayed bridge structures.

Theoretical Determination of Modal Damping Ratio of Sloshing Using a Variational Method

Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 2011
This paper investigates a variational method for theoretically determining the first damping ratio of sloshing in cylindrical and arbitrary axisymmetric tanks. In this method, a virtual work expression for the viscous terms in the Navier–Stokes equations is transformed into the first-mode damping term, thereby extending Hamilton’s principle for ...

Investigating Various Modal Analysis Extraction Techniques to Estimate Damping Ratio

2014
Many researchers have devoted their work to the development of modal analysis extraction techniques in order to obtain more reliable identification of the modal parameters. Also, as a consequence of all this work, there are some other works devoted to the evaluation and comparison of these methods in order to find which one is the most reliable method ...
