Estimation of modal damping ratio of impact-damped flexible beams using ANFIS

Neural Computing and Applications, 2012
This paper presents the development of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) model for estimating the modal damping ratio of impact-damped flexible beams. The experimental results obtained from the literature are used as training and testing data for developing the model. Five of six parameters namely the gap, mass, modal amplitude, frequency,

Identification of modal damping ratios of structures with closely spaced modal frequencies

Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2002
This paper explores the possibility of using a combination of the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert transform (HT), termed the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) method, to identify the modal damping ratios of the structure with closely spaced modal frequencies.

Equivalent modal damping ratios for concrete/steel mixed structures

Computers & Structures, 2010
The present work deals with the dynamic response of elastic multi-degree of freedom structures that are irregular in height, consisting of two parts, a lower part made of concrete and an upper part, made of steel. Irregularity is due to different dynamic response characteristics of the two parts, here expressed by their different damping ratios.

The Determination of Modal Damping Ratios From Maximum Entropy Spectral Estimates

Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control, 1982
This paper focusses on the estimation of natural frequencies and modal damping ratios from measured response spectra, with particular emphasis on the dynamic response of offshore structures to wind and wave excitation. At present, estimates of natural frequencies and damping ratios are computed from the location and half-power bandwidths of resonant ...

On the modal damping ratios of shear-type structures equipped with Rayleigh damping systems

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2006
Abstract The effects of added manufactured viscous dampers upon shear-type structures are analytically investigated here for the class of Rayleigh damping systems. The definitions of mass proportional damping (MPD) and stiffness proportional damping (SPD) systems are briefly recalled and their physical counterpart is derived.

Evaluation of Absolute Damping from Modal Damping Ratios

2004
In the previous chapters, we determined the natural frequencies and modal shapes for undamped structures when modeled as shear buildings. We also determined the response of these structures using the modal superposition method. In this method, as we have seen, the differential equations of motion are uncoupled by means of a transformation of ...

Computational prediction of modal damping ratios in thin-walled structures

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2014
Abstract Modal analysis in finite element packages gives natural frequencies and mode shapes, but not modal damping values. Given a constitutive relation for specific material dissipation, volume integrals of the per cycle dissipation can be used to estimate the modal damping. Here, we adopt a well known power law model for such specific dissipation.

Equivalent modal damping ratios for non-classically damped hybrid steel concrete buildings with transitional storey

Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2014
Over the past years, hybrid building systems, consisting of reinforced concrete frames in bottom and steel frames in top are used as a cost-effective alternative to traditional structural steel or reinforced concrete constructions. Dynamic analysis of hybrid structures is usually a complex procedure due to various dynamic characteristics of each part ...
