Equivalent modal damping ratios for concrete/steel mixed structures

Computers & Structures, 2010
The present work deals with the dynamic response of elastic multi-degree of freedom structures that are irregular in height, consisting of two parts, a lower part made of concrete and an upper part, made of steel. Irregularity is due to different dynamic response characteristics of the two parts, here expressed by their different damping ratios.

Parametric studies on bending stiffness and damping ratio of Sandwich structures

Additive Manufacturing, 2018
Sandwich structures are extensively used in aviation industries to reduce the overall weight of the system. Although the mechanical behavior of these structures has been widely studied, the performance of core shape in vibration response has been ...

Closed‐form optimal solution of two‐degree‐of‐freedom system with Inerter based on equal modal damping with potential application in non‐structural elevator for seismic control

Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics
Targeting the great demand for adding non‐structural elevators to old residential buildings, this article proposes an updated configuration of tuned mass damper inerter (U‐TMDI) applied in external non‐structural elevators.

Modal characteristics and damping enhancement of carbon fiber composite auxetic double-arrow corrugated sandwich panels

Composite structures, 2018
Auxetic materials and structures as a class of metamaterials have been extensively studied and evaluated for many applications. This paper focuses on the fabrication and vibration damping of the carbon fiber composite auxetic double-arrow corrugated ...

Computational prediction of modal damping ratios in thin-walled structures

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2014
Abstract Modal analysis in finite element packages gives natural frequencies and mode shapes, but not modal damping values. Given a constitutive relation for specific material dissipation, volume integrals of the per cycle dissipation can be used to estimate the modal damping. Here, we adopt a well known power law model for such specific dissipation.

Empirical Modeling of Modal Damping Ratio of Impact-Damped Flexible Beams by GEP

Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering, 2017
In this paper, the empirical models for predicting the modal damping ratio ( $$\xi )$$ of impact-damped flexible beams (IDFB) via gene expression programming (GEP) are proposed. The experimental data used in

Evaluation of natural periods and modal damping ratios for seismic design of building structures

Earthquake Spectra, 2020
A comprehensive technique for identification of modal properties (i.e. natural periods and equivalent modal damping ratios) of building structures is presented. The proposed identification technique employs a combination of multiple system identification methods; it utilizes the benefits and suppresses the shortcomings of each method to provide a ...

Modal truncation, Ritz vectors, and derivatives of closed-loop damping ratios

Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 1991
The effect of modal truncation on the damping ratio and their derivatives with respect to an added mass is investigated for a simply supported, multispan beam with a linear quadratic Gaussian control system. It is found that both the damping ratios and derivatives converge slowly, but the derivatives converge more slowly than the damping ratios ...

Equivalent modal damping ratios for non-classically damped hybrid steel concrete buildings with transitional storey

Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2014
Over the past years, hybrid building systems, consisting of reinforced concrete frames in bottom and steel frames in top are used as a cost-effective alternative to traditional structural steel or reinforced concrete constructions. Dynamic analysis of hybrid structures is usually a complex procedure due to various dynamic characteristics of each part ...

Frequencies and damping ratios of bridges through Operational Modal Analysis using smartphones

Construction and Building Materials, 2018
Abstract Seismic Force Assessment in structural design of bridges requires a good estimation of the fundamental period. Estimated periods, using current methodologies in seismic provisions, are approximations that may significantly differ from the real periods.
