Exploring modality switching effects in negated sentences: Further evidence for grounded representations

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2013
Theories of embodied cognition (e.g., Perceptual Symbol Systems Theory; Barsalou, 1999, 2009) suggest that modality-specific simulations underlie the representation of concepts.

Coincidence and modality

open access: yes, 2012
How should we understand de re modal features of objects, if there are such features? Any answer to the question is connected to how we should think about coincident objects, objects which occupy the same spatio-temporal region and share the same ...

Raman‐based label‐free microscopic analysis of the pancreas in living zebrafish larvae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Forward stimulated Raman scattering (F‐SRS) and epi coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (E‐CARS) allow label‐free discrimination of distinct subcellular structures in the pancreas of living zebrafish larvae. Given the straightforward applicability, we anticipate broad implementation of Raman microscopy in other organs and across various biomedical ...

Digital task management platform enhances student academic achievement in economic development education

open access: yesDiscover Education
Based on self-regulated learning theory, a study at Universidad del Norte examined Trello's impact on student performance in an undergraduate Economic Development course. The quasi-experimental research involved 103 students across two semesters, with 52

Derivational Modal Logics with the Difference Modality [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this chapter we study modal logics of topological spaces in the combined language with the derivational modality and the difference modality. We give axiomatizations and prove completeness for the following classes: all spaces, $T_1$-spaces, dense-in-themselves spaces, a zero-dimensional dense-in-itself separable metric space, $R^n$ $(n\ge 2)$.

Identification of functional murine mitochondrial formyl peptides and their effects on myeloid‐derived suppressor cell generation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We first identified functional murine mitochondrial N‐formyl peptides (MT‐FPs) and investigated their effects on the in vitro myeloid‐derived suppressor cell (MDSC) generation from bone marrow cells. We demonstrated that MT‐FPs acted directly on bone marrow cells to promote MDSC generation and modulated the polymorphonuclear (PMN)‐MDSC/monocyte (M ...

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Antibacterial Effect of Silver-Incorporated Flake-Shell Nanoparticles under Dual-Modality

open access: yes, 2016
Silver has been recognized as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent and extensively used in biomedical applications. Through a sequential one-pot synthesis strategy, we have successfully incorporated silver into flake-shell nanoparticles.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MODAL VERBS IN DEONTIC AND EPISTEMIC MODALITY [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Modality is always interesting to discuss. Understanding it is crucial for both language teachers and learners. This essay discusses the concept of modality, its types and uses.
