A comparison of drying kinetics based on the degree of hydration and moisture ratio

open access: yesLWT - Food Science and Technology, 2015
Abstract The most widely used experimental parameter for modeling drying processes is the loss of sample mass, which is converted to the ratio between the water content at time t and the initial water content (moisture ratio, MR). Here we studied the drying of pineapple fruits and converted the experimental data for loss of mass to degree of ...

Optimisation of loading capacity of smoking kiln on drying characteristics of Catfish (Clarias gariepinus)

open access: yesAgricultura Tropica et Subtropica, 2019
Fish smoking is widely used in the fish processing industry, especially in the post-harvest catfish product due to its simple operating technique. The objective of this study was to optimise the tray loading capacity of a smoking kiln for catfish.

Atmospheric moisture residence time affects rainwater isotope ratios [PDF]

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 2012
The water cycle is expected to respond to rising air temperature, which redistributes moisture in the lowest part of the atmosphere, known as the boundary layer. To understand how boundary layer processes redistribute rainfall across different climate settings, climatologists use stable isotope ratios of oxygen and hydrogen in rainwater.

Acute caffeine treatment protects the developing retina from ischemia‐induced cell death

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caffeine reduces cell death in the developing retina under ischemia (OGD). This effect does not involve BDNF upregulation or antioxidant pathways (NRF2/VEGF). Neuroprotection occurs mainly through adenosine A2A receptor antagonism, decreasing glutamate release and excitotoxicity, highlighting caffeine's potential as an acute neuroprotective agent in ...

Diagnosing moisture transport using D/H ratios of water vapor [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2007
Water vapor transport paths into the American Southwest were deduced from a high temporal resolution record of hydrogen isotope compositions of atmospheric water vapor (δDwv) collected over a six‐week period in late spring, 2005, at Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Drying kinetics of potato using a self-designed cabinet dryer

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture, 2015
A laboratory scale cabinet dryer was constructed with an attached weighing balance to calculate changes in the weight of the product without removing it from the dryer. Experiments were conducted to study the effect of process parameters (temperature and

Modeling and simulation of heat and mass transfer in an Ethiopian fresh injera drying process

open access: yesHeliyon, 2021
In this paper, we developed a mathematical model to simulate the heat and mass transfer during the convective drying of injera. The coupled set of heat and moisture partial differential equations (PDEs) were numerically solved by the finite element ...

MagmaFlow: A desktop platform for artificial intelligence‐driven expression analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
MagmaFlow is a free, no‐code platform for gene expression analysis. It generates interactive volcano plots, links genes to literature, pathways, and diseases, prioritizes candidates using millions of publications, identifies affected biological processes, builds network diagrams, and exports publication‐ready figures and reports for macOS and Windows ...
