A novel metaheuristic for traveling salesman problem: blind mole-rat algorithm [PDF]
Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is the problem of finding a minimum distance tour of cities beginning and ending at the same city and that each city are visited only once. As the number of cities increases, it is difficult to find an optimal solution by

Selective inflammatory pain insensitivity in the African naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber).
In all mammals, tissue inflammation leads to pain and behavioral sensitization to thermal and mechanical stimuli called hyperalgesia. We studied pain mechanisms in the African naked mole-rat, an unusual rodent species that lacks pain-related ...

Absence of histamine-induced itch in the African naked mole-rat and "rescue" by Substance P
Recent research has proposed a pathway in which sensory neurons expressing the capsaicin activated ion channel TRPV1 are required for histamine-induced itch and subsequent scratching behavior.

Background The endemic rodent family of Bathyergidae in Africa, particularly South Africa, are understudied as reservoirs of diseases of significant medical importance. Considering the diversity and wide distribution of African mole-rats in South Africa,

The spinal nerves forming the brachial plexus in mole-rats (Spalax leucodon)
In this study, the brachial plexus in the mole-rat was investigated. Six adult mole-rats were used and the brachial plexus of each was dissected. It was found that the brachial plexus in the mole-rat was formed by the rami ventralis of C5.

The Mating Pattern of Captive Naked Mole-Rats Is Best Described by a Monogamy Model
Naked mole-rats form colonies with a single reproductively active female surrounded by subordinate workers. Workers perform offspring care, construction and defense of the burrow system, and food supply.

Naked mole rats are mouse-sized rodents that have become an important animal model in biomedical research. They play a unique mammalian role in behavioral and ecophysiological research of life underground. This chapter studies the general physiology, anatomy of organ systems, husbandry, and uses in research of the naked mole rats.

The Naked Mole-Rat: An Unusual Organism with an Unexpected Latent Potential for Increased Intelligence? [PDF]
Naked mole-rats are eusocial, hairless mammals that are uniquely adapted to their harsh, low-oxygen subsurface habitat. Although their encephalization quotient, a controversial marker of intelligence, is low, they exhibit many features considered tell ...

Light perception in two strictly subterranean rodents: life in the dark or blue?
BackgroundThe African mole-rats (Bathyergidae, Rodentia) are strictly subterranean, congenitally microphthalmic rodents that are hardly ever exposed to environmental light.

The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
