Adhesion and cytoskeletal structure are intimately related in biological cell function. Even with the vast amount of biological and biochemical data that exist, little is known at the molecular level about physical mechanisms involved in attachments between cells or about consequences of adhesion on the material structure. To expose physical actions at

Assessing temporal and spatial variability in Pfiesteria piscicida distributions using molecular probing techniques [PDF]
The toxic dinoflagellate Pfiesteria piscicida has been identified in coastal waters and estuaries along the Atlantic coast of the United States. Estuaries in the mid-Atlantic region, in partic- ular, have been targeted as high-risk areas for toxic blooms since reports of Pfiesteria-related fish kills in the Pocomoke River, Maryland, in 1997.

Gold nanorods as molecular probes for light-based imaging techniques [PDF]
The thesis describes the use of gold nanorods as molecular probes for light-based imaging techniques for potential applications in biology and medicine. An overview of the synthesis and critical parameters influencing the synthesis of gold nanorods on size/shape/yield of nanorods are discussed. For using gold nanorods in vivo, the concerns of toxicity,

Sum-Frequency Vibrational Spectroscopy on Chiral Liquids: A Novel Technique to Probe Molecular Chirality [PDF]
Optical activity in sum-frequency vibrational spectra has been observed for the first time in chiral liquids. The electric-dipole allowed chiral element of the nonlinear susceptibility appears to be 3 orders of magnitude smaller than typical allowed achiral elements.

Probing Molecular Dynamics with Non-linear Optical Techniques
The dynamics of molecules in the gas and liquid phase is investigated using ultrafast optical techniques. The development of sub-25 fs ultrafast sources using noncollinear optical parametric amplification is discussed. These intense pulses are utilized in coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering to investigate vibrational motion in I2 Br2 and IBr.

Studies of Molecular Motions in Acylchitin Films by Means of Spin-Probe Technique [PDF]
The molecular motions in acylated chitins, including acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, caproyl, capryl, lauroyl, and benzoylchitin, were investigated by ESR measurements with 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-hydroxypiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) as a spin-probe. Introduction of a longer side chain into the chitin molecule resulted in a remarkable lowering of the temperature
