Streptococcus pyogenesは,ヒトに咽頭炎等の風邪様症状を起こすほか,皮膚化膿症,産辱熱,敗血症,さらには非化膿性の続発症としてリウマチ熱や急性糸球体腎炎など,さまざまな病態を引き起こすことが知られている。わが国では,小児の疾患として代表的な猩紅熱は1970年頃から減少し,これに代わるかのように1990年代初め頃より劇症型レンサ球菌感染症(TSLS)が出現するなど本菌感染症の病態が変化しているかにみえるが,いわゆる溶連菌感染症の患者数は減少していない。欧米においても,TSLSを含め侵襲性の重篤な症状を呈する本菌感染症が1980年半ば頃より増加し,分離菌株のサブタイピングがそれ以外の症状との比較のうえで行われている。本稿では,血清型の周期的な流行パターンや薬剤耐性の経年変化を含め,S.
