Stimulation of glucose transport in skeletal muscle by the sodium ionophore monensin
Biochimica Et Biophysica Acta - Biomembranes, 1985The tissue/medium distribution of the nonmetabolized glucose analog 3-O-methyl-D-glucose was measured in mouse diaphragm muscle and related to changes in 45Ca influx, Na+ content and Na+-pump activity. In the presence of external Ca2+ the sodium ionophore monensin greatly increased cellular Na+ content (and decreased K+ content) although 86Rb uptake ...

The action of the sodium ionophore, monensin, on spontaneous and evoked transmitter release at the frog neuromuscular junction was studied. Ringer's solutions with low calcium concentrations (0.4 mM or 0 Ca 1 mM EGTA) were used to bathe the preparation.

Crystal structure and properties of the copper(II) complex of sodium monensin A
Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, 2009The preparation and structural characterization of a new copper(II) complex of the polyether ionophorous antibiotic sodium monensin A (MonNa) are described. Sodium monensin A binds Cu(II) to produce a heterometallic complex of composition [Cu(MonNa)(2)Cl(2)].H(2)O, 1. The crystallographic data of 1 show that the complex crystallizes in monoclinic space

The effect of sodium monensin on pregnant ewes
British Veterinary Journal, 1985Abstract Sodium monensin (monensin) was fed to ewes during late pregnancy. Food intake, live-weight change and lamb birth-weights were recorded. Blood samples were obtained for estimation of glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate, albumin and urea. Ewes significantly reduced their food intake in response to treatment with sodium monensin and lost more live ...

Delayed monensin sodium toxicity in horses
Equine Veterinary Journal, 1981Summary Thirty‐two horses were examined with a history of poor performance and unthriftiness several months after the ingestion of feed containing monensin sodium. Cardiac abnormality was diagnosed in 8 cases and suspected in 4 others. Necropsy examinations were performed on 6 cases with marked clinical symptoms

Accidental monensin sodium intoxication of feedlot cattle
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1984Summary Of 1,994 yearling and 2-year-old cattle in a winter feeding program, 117 died within 42 days of being fed toxic amounts of monensin sodium in a liquid protein supplement. Death losses commenced on the third day after ingestion of a toxic amount in the feed. Clinical signs in cattle that died in less than 9 days included anorexia, pica, diarrhea,

Comparative Toxicology of Monensin Sodium in Laboratory Animals
Journal of Animal Science, 1984The toxicology of monensin has been studied in several laboratory animal species. There was considerable species variation in acute oral LD50 values. The consistent signs of acute toxicity were: anorexia, hypoactivity, skeletal muscle weakness, ataxia, diarrhea, decreased weight gain and delayed deaths. The 3-mo study in rats fed diets containing 0, 50,

ADAPTATION OF RUMEN BACTERIA TO SODIUM AND MONENSIN
Canadian Journal of Animal Science, 1984Rumen bacteria were able to adapt to concentrations of Na+ > 300 mM. This is higher than that normally found in the rumen (< 200 mM Na+). In chemostat culture both Selenomonas ruminantium and Ruminococcus albus adapted to the effects of Na+ and monensin. Substrate yields slowly decreased before reaching steady state values.

Fasciola hepatica: the effect of the sodium inophore monensin on the adult tegument
Parasitology Research, 1989The effect on the tegument of adult Fasciola hepatica of incubation in the sodium ionophore monensin, the Na+/K+-ATPase inhibitor ouabain and ouabain pretreatment followed by monensin has been determined in vitro by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). With monensin incubation alone (1 x 10(-6) M), a flattening of the tegument with

Kinetics of monensin complexation with sodium ions by 23Na NMR spectroscopy
Biophysical Chemistry, 1977The kinetics of the sodium binding to the ionophore monensin (Mon) in methanol has been studied by 23NaNMR spectroscopy. Fast quadrupole relaxation of the bound sodium affected the relaxation rate of the free sodium through an exchange process between these two species.
