Monoamine oxidases in development
Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, 2012Monoamine oxidases (MAOs) are flavoproteins of the outer mitochondrial membrane that catalyze the oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines. In mammals there are two isoforms (MAO-A and MAO-B) that can be distinguished on the basis of their substrate specificity and their sensitivity towards specific inhibitors.

Another look at the monoamine oxidases and the monoamine oxidase inhibitor drugs
Life Sciences, 1974Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the monoamine oxidases (MAO) and the MAO inhibitor drugs. Phenylethylamines and indolethylamines appear to be the endogenous substrates for tissue MAO. The m-O-methylated catecholamine metabolites have lower values than the parent amines.

AbstractHomogenates of the liver, the kidneys and the brain of the hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus,. have been tested for monoamine oxidase activity. The enzyme was present in all 3 tissues, and the enzyme was found to act on all the substrates known to be oxidised by other mammalian sources of the enzyme.

Evidence for the genetic control of human MAO is now well established. The relationships of MAO activities to neuropsychiatric disorders or response to psychopharmacologic treatments are relatively unstudied. Preliminary findings from our own studies suggest that (1) blood MAO activity is a polygenically controlled trait; (2) there may be a subgroup of

Monoamine oxidase activity in diabetes
Diabetes, 1983Monoamine oxidase (MAO) activities were measured in platelets from insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetic subjects and in platelets from nondiabetic controls. Circulating levels of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1) were determined simultaneously. Mean MAO activities were not significantly different in any of these groups.

Platelet monoamine oxidase in alcoholism
Psychopharmacology, 2005Platelet MAO activity was studied in the large groups of drug naï ; ; ; ; ; ve male and female alcoholics in the withdrawal syndrome related to alcohol dependency, subdivided according to sex, smoking status, number of cigarettes smoked per day, or different psychiatric comorbid diagnoses.

Differentiation of monoamine oxidase and diamine oxidase
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1962Abstract In kidney of cats pretreated with inhibitors of monoamine oxidase and diamine oxidase the activity of these enzymes was measured simultaneously, using typical cell fractions and substrates. After iproniazid pretreatment inhibition of diamine oxidase occurred somewhat earlier and was of shorter duration than inhibition of monoamine oxidase ...

Introductory remarks on monoamine oxidase
Journal of Psychiatric Research, 1974Publisher Summary An enzyme like monoamine oxidase (MAO) may be indirectly involved in a pathological condition of the central nervous system, even if its biosynthesis is not the prime cause of the condition. At present, the role of MAO in the inactivation of dopamine, noradrenaline, and 5-hydroxytryptamine is better understood.

Cannabinoids and monoamine neurotransmission with focus on monoamine oxidase
Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, 2012Progress in understanding the mechanisms of action of cannabinoids was made after discovery of cannabinoid receptors and finding their endogenous ligands. New findings are obtained using both endogenous cannabinoids and plant or synthetic cannabinoids.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and whole blood, platelet and plasma monoamine oxidase
Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology, 19791. Whole lysed blood monoamine oxidase activity using benzylamine as substrate, represents an addition of platelet and plasma activity. 2. Enzyme activity measured in whole lysed blood in the presence of 10(-4)M pargyline gave a value equivalent to plasma monoamine oxidase, and by subtraction gives a value for platelet enzyme activity. 3.
