Crystallization of monosodium urate and calcium urate at 37°C

Abstract The solubility of monosodium urate in a stoichiometric solution is 6.5 m M at 37°C. The supersaturation ratio required for nucleation increases from about 5 to over 20 as the sodium to urate ratio increases from 1 to over 30. Thus sodium urate nucleation is much more sensitive to urate concentration than to sodium concentration.

Abstract A microscopic method has been used to measure crystal-growth rates for monosodium urate monohydrate from aqueous solution at 37°C. The dependence of the rate on supersaturation obeys a surface-nucleation law, not a screw dislocation type of law.

Monosodium urate crystals (MSU) have been shown to activate the alternative pathway of complement in a dose- and time-dependent fashion at 37 degrees C. Activation was maximal upon addition of 10-20 mg/ml monosodium urate crystals to C2-deficient human serum (C2D) or normal human serum containing 5 mM MgEGTA.

Monosodium urate crystals in asymptomatic knee joints.

Monosodium urate (MSU) crystals were shown in synovial (SF) fluid taken from the asymptomatic knee joints of 11 out of 13 patients with tophaceous gout. Intracellular crystals were identified in some cases. Examination of synovial biopsies taken concurrently revealed MSU crystals in 2 out of 6 cases.
