Thoracic Excursion Is a Biomarker for Evaluating Respiratory Function in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2022
ObjectiveTo evaluate the usefulness of thoracic excursion as a biomarker in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).MethodsWe measured the forced the vital capacity (FVC), thoracic excursion, baseline-to-peak diaphragmatic compound muscle ...

Integration of Serum Neurofilament Light Chain and Cortical Dysfunction Improves Diagnostic Accuracy in ALS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To determine whether integration of serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) and cortical dysfunction improves diagnostic accuracy in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) when applied alongside the Gold Coast criteria (GCC). Methods In this prospective study, 148 participants with suspected ALS were recruited (101 ALS and 47 with ALS ...

Delayed diagnosis of myelitis in a patient with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease: a case report

open access: yesJournal of International Medical Research, 2021
A case of myelitis following Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is reported, in which diagnosis and treatment were delayed. A 43-year-old male patient diagnosed with VKH disease presented at the Spine Centre of Yeungnam University Hospital, Daegu ...

S168 Evaluation of the MRC dyspnoea scale and a novel extended version in prediction of in-hospital death and early readmission in acute exacerbations of COPD [PDF]

open access: yesThorax, 2010
Introduction and objectives Acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) requiring hospitalisation are associated with substantial in-hospital mortality and frequent readmissions. The MRC Dyspnoea Scale (MRCD) is a strong predictor of mortality in stable disease and may predict in-hospital mortality in AECOPD.1 We investigated the relative value, for ...

Test Segmentation of MRC Document Compression and Decompression by Using MATLAB [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
-The mixed raster content (MRC) standard specifies a framework for document compression which can dramatically improve the compression/ quality tradeoff as compared to traditional lossy image compression algorithms.

Targeting Post‐Irradiation Thyroid Dysfunction: Electrospun Scaffolds As A Dual‐Action Approach for Antioxidant and Immune Modulation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Radiation‐induced hypothyroidism follows head and neck radiotherapy due to oxidative stress and inflammation. Electrospun polycaprolactone scaffolds containing adenosine have potential to modulate thyroid repair. Scaffolds enhance thyrocyte proliferation, antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and catalase, reduce senescence and apoptosis markers ...

Responsiveness to Change of 5-point MRC scale, Endurance and Functional Evaluation for Assessing Myositis in Daily Clinical Practice

open access: yesJournal of Neuromuscular Diseases, 2019
Background: Manual muscle testing has been widely used for the evaluation of muscle strength in myositis, yet less attention has been devoted to the evaluation of muscle function and endurance. Objective: Our objective was therefore to compare the responsiveness to change of muscle strength, endurance and functional testing following induction therapy ...

Modified Sphygmomanometer Test and MRC Muscle Scale to assess lower limb muscle strength in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a correlation study

open access: yesSão Paulo Medical Journal, 2021
Background: The measurement of strength through MRC Muscle Scale (MRC) is the most widely used method to follow the evolution of disabilities in people diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), since it is easy and fast to measure. However, it has been considered a subjective and evaluator dependent method.

Rethinking Charge Transport and Recombination in Donor‐Diluted Organic Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Organic solar cells with 1–45% PM6 content in Y12 were studied to link structure and charge dynamics to performance. The conductivity follows a 3D percolation model without a sharp threshold. Donor dilution preserves the photogeneration yield, but limits the fill factor due to transport resistance losses.

Extra-pulmonary features in COPD patients entering rehabilitation after stratification for MRC dyspnea grade

open access: yes, 2007
SummaryExperts have stated that referral for rehabilitation of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) becomes appropriate when these patients become aware of their disability (e.g. usually grade 3 to 5 on the Medical Research Council (
