TWEAK/Fn14 Signaling Drives Oxidative Cardiac Injury in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Evidence From Patient Biomarker Studies, Lupus Mouse Models, and Cardiomyocyte Assays

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective Cardiac involvement is a major cause of morbidity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Tumor necrosis factor–like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) is elevated in SLE, but its contribution to lupus‐associated cardiac injury is unclear. We investigated the role of TWEAK/fibroblast growth factor–inducible 14 (Fn14) signaling in SLE‐related ...

Lipid Traffic Analysis reveals the impact of high paternal carbohydrate intake on offsprings’ lipid metabolism

open access: yesCommunications Biology, 2021
Furse et al. use a purpose-built computational tool called Lipid Traffic Analysis to determine the spatial distribution of lipids throughout an organism.

Effect of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors on postprandial glucagon level in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A systemic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2022
AimsHyperglucagonemia occurs in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this meta-analysis, we summarized the effects of DPP4 inhibitors on glucagon levels in patients with T2DM.Materials and methodsRandomized controlled trials (RCTs ...

A panchromatic view of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6569 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
We used high-resolution optical HST/WFC3 and multi-conjugate adaptive optics assisted GEMINI GeMS/GSAOI observations in the near-infrared to investigate the physical properties of the globular cluster NGC 6569 in the Galactic bulge.

Sequential study of vasculitis in MRL mice [PDF]

open access: yesLaboratory Animals, 1987
The frequency, age of onset and organ distribution of spontaneously occurring vasculitis was examined in a sequential study with 170 MRL mice of both substrains. Necrotizing vasculitis was seen in 55·8% of MRL/Mp-lpr/lpr mice studied, beginning at the age of 3 months. The kidney and urinary bladder were most frequently involved.

Kidney Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells Contribute to Myeloid Development and Pathology in Lupus Nephritis

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Accepted Article.
Objectives The hematopoietic system maintains homeostasis by balancing myeloid and lymphoid cell production in the bone marrow (BM). In response to increased hematopoietic demand, extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) may occur in non‐lymphoid organs. We investigated the role of EMH and kidney‐resident hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) in ...

Biostructural, biochemical and biophysical studies of mutant IDH1

open access: yesNature Communications
We report bio-structural, bio-chemical and bio-physical evidence demonstrating how small molecules can bind to both wild-type and mutant IDH1, but only inhibit the enzymatic activity of the mutant isoform.

A method to estimate probability of disease and vaccine efficacy from clinical trial immunogenicity data

open access: yesnpj Vaccines, 2021
Vaccine efficacy is often assessed by counting disease cases in a clinical trial. A new quantitative framework proposed here (“PoDBAY,” Probability of Disease Bayesian Analysis), estimates vaccine efficacy (and confidence interval) using immune response ...

On the Zitterbewegung Transient Regime in a Coarse-Grained Space-Time [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In the present contribution, by studying a fractional version of Dirac's equation for the electron, we show that the phenomenon of Zitterbewegung in a coarse-grained medium exhibits a transient oscillatory behavior, rather than a purely oscillatory ...
