Novel Mechanistic Insight into the Anticancer Activity of Cucurbitacin D against Pancreatic Cancer (Cuc D Attenuates Pancreatic Cancer)

open access: yesCells, 2019
Pancreatic cancer (PanCa) is one of the leading causes of death from cancer in the United States. The current standard treatment for pancreatic cancer is gemcitabine, but its success is poor due to the emergence of drug resistance.

Novel Sustained-Release Drug Delivery System for Dry Eye Therapy by Rebamipide Nanoparticles

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2020
The commercially available rebamipide ophthalmic suspension (CA-REB) was approved for clinical use in patients with dry eye; however, the residence time on the ocular surface for the traditional formulations is short, since the drug is removed from the ...

Gut microbiota shape the inflammatory response in mice with an epithelial defect

open access: yesGut Microbes, 2021
Intestinal epithelial cell endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been implicated in intestinal inflammation. It remains unclear whether ER stress is an initiator of or a response to inflammation.

3D Bioprinted Glioblastoma Multiforme Models: How the Extracellular Matrix Glycosignature Influences Drug Response

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Aberrant glycosylation in the glioblastoma tumor microenvironment drives therapeutic resistance. Here, a 3D bioprinted model was engineered by incorporating α‐NeuNAc‐(2→3)‐β‐D‐Gal‐ and chondroitin sulfate. Combined multiplex immunofluorescence and synchrotron‐based nanoCT analysis revealed that glycan‐matrix interactions dictate specific drug‐escape ...

The Role of the Cell Surface Mucin MUC1 as a Barrier to Infection and Regulator of Inflammation

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2019
The family of cell surface (cs-) mucins are constitutively expressed at the cell surface by nearly all epithelial cells, beneath the gel-mucin layer.

Mucins and calcium phosphate precipitates additively stimulate cholesterol crystallization

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1998
Human biliary mucin and calcium binding protein (CBP) influence formation of both calcium salt precipitates and cholesterol crystals and colocalize in the center of cholesterol gallstones.

Functional Differentiation of Type II and Type I Collagen Articular Models in Synovial Fluid Film Formation and Recombinant Equine Lubricin Retention

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen II coatings support the formation of synovial fluid nanofilms, while collagen I coatings do not. Both bind recombinant equine lubricin similarly. These findings may help explain articular cartilage surface joint dysfunction, inform biomaterial design for synovial joint repair, and expand on lubricin‐based osteoarthritis therapies.

Prominent members of the human gut microbiota express endo-acting O-glycanases to initiate mucin breakdown

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
The thick mucus layer of the gut provides a barrier to infiltration of the underlying epithelia by both the normal microbiota and enteric pathogens.

A Fully Defined GelMA‐Based Matrix Allows Fine Tuning of Tissue‐Relevant Biomechanical and Biochemical Cues for Organoid Culture

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A fully defined GelMA‐based ECM platform integrates tunable tissue‐relevant stiffness with laminin–entactin biochemical supplementation to support mouse small intestinal organoid growth. Coordinated control of mechanical and biochemical cues promotes robust proliferation, budding morphogenesis, differentiation, and passaging, providing a reproducible ...
