Lentinan -triggered butyrate-producing bacteria drive the expulsion of the intestinal helminth Trichinella spiralis in mice

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2022
Trichinellosis caused by Trichinella spiralis is a serious zoonosis with a worldwide distribution. Lentinan (LNT) is known to modulate the intestinal environment with noted health benefits, yet the effect of LNT against intestinal helminth is unknown. In

The biochemical and molecular characterisation of respiratory mucins in TB [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 96-112).The role of the dominant respiratory mucins (MUC5AC and MUC5B) and MUC2 has been investigated in chronic airway diseases as it is the mucin glycoprotein that confers upon mucus its biological ...

Probing the effect of aroma compounds on the hydrodynamic properties of mucin glycoproteins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
© 2020, The Author(s). Aroma compounds are diverse low molecular weight organic molecules responsible for the flavour of food, medicines or cosmetics. Natural and artificial aroma compounds are manufactured and used by the industry to enhance the flavour

Inhibitory effect of pentoxifylline on the synthesis and deposition of glycosaminoglycans in hypothyroid skin

open access: yesBiotechnology & Biotechnological Equipment, 2022
The skin manifestations in hypothyroidism are common but their advanced forms do not have adequate therapy. Along with achievement of euthyroidism, thyroid-associated dermatopathy (TAD) needs an inhibition of the proliferation and activation of ...

The Vaginal Lactobacillus gasseri YS1021 Effectively Degraded Mucin by Enzymolysis of M13 Metallopeptidase

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Mucin is the core component of the mucus layer barrier in the human reproductive tract and the interaction between mucin and commensal bacteria is crucial for the female reproductive health.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The isolation, purification, tissue localization and identification of a glycoprotein found in the crude mucus gel of patients with carcinoma of the stomach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 101-138).The thin layer of crude mucus lining the human gastric mucosa protects the delicate gastric epithelium from the high shear forces associated with digestion. Gastric mucus is composed largely of water (>
