Dobutamine, Epinephrine, and Milrinone Accelerate Particle Transport Velocity in Murine Tracheal Epithelium via Ca2+ Release from Caffeine-Sensitive Internal Stores

open access: yesCells
Mucociliary clearance, the ability of the respiratory tract to protect the integrity of the airways through the mechanical removal of potentially harmful substances, is of enormous importance during intensive care treatment.

Sputum and mucociliary clearance mechanisms [PDF]

open access: yesPostgraduate Medical Journal, 1976
Summary Bronchial secretion forms a periciliary liquid layer and may also give rise to thicker secretion that moves on the tips of the cilia. This latter material as collected at bronchoscopy or coughed up as sputum is a viscoelastic substance behaving in a characteristic way over a wide range of shear rates.

Tracking of [14C]Polystyrene Nanoplastics in Pregnant Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study investigates [14C]polystyrene nanoplastic ([14C]PS) translocation in late‐stage pregnant mice after intranasal (0.5 mg of [14C]PS on GD12, GD14, and GD16, n = 6) and intravenous administration (1.5 mg of [14C]PS on GD16, n = 6). 14C‐radiolabel allows quantitative tracking of unmodified polystyrene nanoplastics.

The Effects of the Anti-aging Protein Klotho on Mucociliary Clearance

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2020
α-klotho (KL) is an anti-aging protein and has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects in the lung and pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis.

A novel two-step sequential bioaccessibility test for potentially toxic elements in inhaled particulate matter transported into the gastrointestinal tract by mucociliary clearance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A novel two-step sequential extraction has been developed to assess the bioaccessibility of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in airborne particulate matter following inhalation and transport into the human gastrointestinal tract by mucociliary ...

Smart Nanotechnologies for Multimodal Neuromodulation and Brain Interfacing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Recent advances in smart nanotechnologies are expanding the toolbox for brain interfacing, from wireless neuromodulation and high‐resolution sensing to targeted delivery within the central nervous system. By combining responsive nanomaterials with bioinspired design, these platforms enable multimodal interactions with neurons and glia, while also ...

Effect of needle puncture and electro-acupuncture on mucociliary clearance in anesthetized quails

open access: yesBMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2006
Background Acupuncture therapy for obstructive respiratory diseases has been effectively used in clinical practice and the acupuncture points or acupoints of Zhongfu and Tiantu are commonly-used acupoints to treat patients with the diseases.

Mucociliary Transport Device Construction and Application to Study Mucociliary Clearance. [PDF]

open access: yesMethods Mol Biol, 2023
Well-differentiated air-liquid interface cultures of airway epithelial cells produce and secrete mucus and have abundant cilia that beat in the apical fluid. In cultures, this ciliary beating is not well coordinated or occurs in small focal areas so the resulting mucociliary transport (MCT) is only linear over short distances. We present a method which

Age-related changes in the respiratory system [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
This article summarises the main structural and physiological changes which take place in the lung from young adulthood to senescence. An understanding of these changes helps the clinician to correctly interpret some results of radiology and pulmonary ...

Soft Artificial Ciliary Brush with Integrated Haptic Feedback for Efficient Airway Mucus Cleaning

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A fundamental mucus cleaning mechanism is reported, which utilizes both artificial cilia mechanical sweeping and suction‐based mucus cleaning. A novel haptic feedback interface for the artificial cilia provides touch feedback on tissue contact, enhancing operator control and safety.
