Geomorphology and Late Pleistocene–Holocene Sedimentary Processes of the Eastern Gulf of Finland

open access: yesGeosciences, 2018
In 2017, a detailed study of the Eastern Gulf of Finland (the Baltic Sea) seafloor was performed to identify and map submerged glacial and postglacial geomorphologic features and collect data pertinent to the understanding of sedimentation in postglacial

Robust Design for NOMA-Based Multibeam LEO Satellite Internet of Things [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Internet of Things Journal, 2020
In this article, we investigate the issue of massive access in a beyond fifth-generation (B5G) multibeam low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite Internet-of-Things (IoT) network in the presence of channel phase uncertainty due to channel-state information (CSI ...

AUV Navigation Correction Based on Automated Multibeam Tile Matching

open access: yesSensors, 2022
Ocean science and hydroacoustic seafloor mapping rely on accurate navigation underwater. By exploiting terrain information provided by a multibeam echosounder system, it is possible to significantly improve map quality. This article presents an algorithm

Automatic Detection of Outliers in Multibeam Echo Sounding Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The data volumes produced by new generation multibeam systems are very large, especially for shallow water systems. Results from recent multibeam surveys indicate that the ratio of the field survey time, to the time used in interactive editing through ...

Robust Spot Melting by 3D Spot Arrangements in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes an approach to replace separately melted contours for spot melting in electron beam powder fusion. Adapting the spot arrangements close to the contour combined with stacking yields a comparable surface quality without the inherent challenges of separate contours, as demonstrated, by electron optical images and roughness measurements.

Flow and retreat of the Late Quaternary Pine Island-Thwaites palaeo-ice stream, West Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Multibeam swath bathymetry and sub-bottom profiler data are used to establish constraints on the flow and retreat history of a major palaeo-ice stream that carried the combined discharge from the parts of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet now occupied by the ...

New Directions in Focused Ion Beam Induced Deposition for the Nanoprinting of Functional 3D Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Here, it is shown that focused ion beam induced deposition (FIBID) using helium and neon ions enables advanced high‐resolution 3D nanoprinting achieving precise multimaterial architectures and engineered internal voids. Thus, FIBID with finely focused noble gas ion species is presented as a unique platform for designing functional nanomaterials for ...

Automated Feature Extraction and Classification of Submerged Cultural Heritage Assets in the Puck Lagoon via Multisensor Remote Sensing

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study presents a strong framework for the detection and classification of Submerged Cultural Heritage Assets (SCHA) in shallow marine environments using the integration of multibeam echosounder and airborne LiDAR bathymetry with object‐based image analysis and fuzzy logic–based classification.

Calibration of multibeam echo sounders: a comparison between two methodologies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Multibeam echo sounders (MBES) are widely used in applications like seafloor imaging, fisheries, and habitat mapping. Calibration of acoustic backscatter is an important aspect of understanding and validating the performance of a MBES.
