Abstract Background Strangles (Streptococcus equi infection) remains endemic in the UK, with ~300 laboratory diagnoses annually. Sub‐clinically infected long‐term carriers are considered a key driver of endemicity. Analysing genomes of circulating strains could provide valuable transmission insights of this pathogen.

Short read sequence typing (SRST): multi-locus sequence types from short reads
Background Multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) has become the gold standard for population analyses of bacterial pathogens. This method focuses on the sequences of a small number of loci (usually seven) to divide the population and is simple, robust and ...

ABSTRACT Aim The role of historical drainage connectivity and the influence of water level fluctuations in African lakes on the evolution and distribution of macroinvertebrates remain poorly understood. This is partly because evolutionary biology research has largely focused on mobile vertebrates, such as cichlids.

Burkholderia pseudomallei in Unchlorinated Domestic Bore Water, Tropical Northern Australia
To determine whether unchlorinated bore water in northern Australia contained Burkholderia pseudomallei organisms, we sampled 55 bores; 18 (33%) were culture positive. Multilocus sequence typing identified 15 sequence types. The B.

Trichophyton indotineae: Epidemiology, antifungal resistance and antifungal stewardship strategies
There is a concerning trend of widespread and severe superficial fungal infections caused by a new pathogen—Trichophyton indotineae—resistant to standard antifungal therapies. T. indotineae is now spreading globally and evolving. There is increasing urgency for healthcare providers and policy makers to initiate surveillance systems and antifungal ...

Using BOX-PCR to exclude a clonal outbreak of melioidosis
Background Although melioidosis in endemic regions is usually caused by a diverse range of Burkholderia pseudomallei strains, clonal outbreaks from contaminated potable water have been described. Furthermore B. pseudomallei is classified as a CDC Group B

A number of molecular typing methods have been developed for characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolates. The utility of these systems depends on the nature of the investigation for which they are used.

Abstract A new species of ghost electric knifefish, Porotergus sambaibensis sp. nov., is described from the Javaés River, a tributary of the Araguaia River in Brazil. The new species was assigned to the genus Porotergus as the closest relative to Porotergus gimbeli through maximum likelihood reconstruction of a concatenated multilocus dataset ...

Phylogeny and Disease Association of Shiga Toxin–producing Escherichia coli O91
The diversity and relatedness of 100 Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli O91 isolates from different patients were examined by multilocus sequence typing. We identified 10 specific sequence types (ST) and 4 distinct clonal groups.
