Femtosecond Extreme Nonlinear Optics with Multimode Fibers

Optica Nonlinear Optics Topical Meeting 2023, 2023
We overview the nonlinear spatiotemporal propagation dynamics of femtosecond laser pulses in multimode optical fibers. Whenever the pulse peak power approaches the fiber breakdown threshold, several exotic nonlinear effects are observed.

Fiber optic interferometric sensors using multimode fibers

SPIE Proceedings, 1991
We have considered some problems of applicability of multimode optical fibers in various interferometric configurations for optical fiber sensors development. The analysis was based on theoretical and experimental studies of spatial-temporal coherence function propagation in multimode fibers.

Optical fiber grating sensors in multimode fibers

Smart Materials and Structures, 2000
We present a novel class of optical fiber sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings written in germanium-doped silica multimode fibers that can be implemented with inexpensive components. The gratings are inscribed by the phase mask technique in 50/125 μm step-index profile fibers and their temperature and strain responses are investigated.

Multimode-optical-fiber Michelson interferometer

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1983
A multimode-optical-fiber Michelson interferometer is constructed by utilizing a fiber-optic directional coupler as a beam-splitting/recombining element, and is used to measure an amplitude of sinusoidal vibration in a homodyne detection scheme. The mixing efficiency in interferometry is discussed on a simplified assumption of the propagating field and

Fiber optic multimode displacement sensor

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1996
An underwater Optical Motion Sensor (OMS) based on a design first presented by W. B. Spillman, Schlieren multimode fiber‐optic hydrophone, Applied Physics Letters 37(2), 15 July 1980, p. 145–146 is described. The displacement sensor uses the same acoustooptical intensity modulation mechanism as Spillman, however the sensing mechanism is isolated from ...

Dispersive Multiplexing in Multimode Optical Fiber

Science, 2000
Recently developed ideas in the field of wireless communications suggest that the presence of scattering can be used to enhance, rather than degrade, the total information capacity of a transmission system. This concept is applied to data transmission over multimode optical fiber, and the result is an optical multiplexing that can increase the capacity

Schlieren multimode fiber-optic hydrophone

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1980
A multimode fiber-optic hydrophone based upon a Schlieren intensity modulation mechanism is described. The device possesses sufficient sensitivity to detect the Knudson sea noise levels in the frequency range 100 Hz to 1 kHz and to detect static displacements as small as 2.5 × 1013 Å.

Elliptical core multimode optical fibers

2012 17th Opto-Electronics and Communications Conference, 2012
We propose a new elliptical core polarization maintaining multimode fiber design with low index trench. We analyze fiber properties such as birefringence, modal delay, bandwidth and mode coupling using a finite element method.

Multimode optical-fiber access port

Optical Fiber Communication, 1979
As progress is being made toward the development of fiber-optic systems, real applications are surfacing that require economical means to monitor and control the optical power propagating in a fiber. These applications include timedomain reflectometry,1 source stabilization,2 source linearization,3 wavelength multiplexing,4 branching networks,5 and ...
