Synergistic perspectives—How single‐molecule biophysics complement biochemical understanding

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how ensemble biochemistry and single‐molecule approaches are complementary, outline commonly used single‐molecule techniques, and illustrate their relevance through two representative case studies: chromatin organization by SMC complexes and pathway choice during DNA double‐strand break repair.

Cancer Trends: Mesothelioma

open access: yes, 2012
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the thin lining that mainly covers the lungs and abdominal cavity. An average of 24 cases of mesothelioma was diagnosed per year in Ireland between 1994 and 2010 (Table 1), representing less than 0.2% of all invasive ...

Mir143 expression inversely correlates with nuclear ERK5 immunoreactivity in clinical prostate cancer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
<p>Background: Aberrant mitogen/extracellular signal-regulated kinase 5 (MEK5)–extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 5 (ERK5)-mediated signalling has been implicated in a number of tumour types including prostate cancer (CaP). The mechanism

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

Cancer Trends: Soft Tissue Sarcomas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Sarcomas are a group of uncommon cancers that originate from mesenchymal cells as opposed to more well-known cancers that develop from epithelial tissue.

The ubiquitin system in normal and infected germinal center B cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The ubiquitin system plays a central role in germinal center (GC) B cells, influencing differentiation to long‐lived memory B cells. Oncogenic gammaherpesviruses gain access to memory B cells by establishing latency in GC B cells. Mapping ubiquitin mechanisms in normal and infected GC B cells will define specific molecular circuits in B cells germane ...

Cancer Trends: Cancer of the pancreas

open access: yes, 2012
Cancer of the pancreas accounts for approximately 2.5% of all invasive cancers and is the 9th most commonly diagnosed cancer in Ireland.1 Almost 400 cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed annually between 1994 and 2010 (Table 1).

Association between patient and general practice characteristics and unplanned first-time admissions for cancer: observational study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: To identify patient and general practice (GP) characteristics associated with emergency (unplanned) first admissions for cancer in secondary care. METHODS: Patients who had a first-time admission with a primary diagnosis of cancer during 2007/

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.
