Improvement of Arctic Sea Ice Type Concentration Retrieval From Microwave Remote Sensing Data

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Sea ice types, such as first-year ice and multiyear ice, can be discriminated based on radiometric and scattering signatures. However, changes in ice surface properties caused by processes like ice surface deformation and melt-refreeze events can lead to

ESG Controversies and Corporate Performance: A Critical Appraisal of Rating Methodologies and Empirical Evidence

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT ESG controversies have become relevant signals in capital markets. However, controversy measurement is not strictly regulated, and evidence on whether and under which conditions such events affect firm‐level performance remains fragmented and lacks quality appraisal.

Large Decadal Decline of the Arctic Multiyear Ice Cover [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2012
Abstract The perennial ice area was drastically reduced to 38% of its climatological average in 2007 but recovered slightly in 2008, 2009, and 2010 with the areas being 10%, 24%, and 11% higher than in 2007, respectively. However, trends in extent and area remained strongly negative at −12.2% and −13.5% decade−1, respectively.

A Multiyear Photometric Study of IC 348 [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2004
The extremely young cluster IC 348 has been monitored photometrically over 5 observing seasons from Dec 1998 to March 2003 in Cousins I with a 0.6 m telescope at Van Vleck Observatory. Twenty-eight periodic variables and 16 irregular variables have been identified.

Satellite observations reveal a significant poleward expansion of the multiyear sea ice replenishment in the heart region of Arctic Ocean

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
Multiyear sea ice replenishment due to first-year ice aging at the end of the summer is a key factor in maintaining the overall Arctic sea ice mass balance.

Quantifying the Potential for Snow‐Ice Formation in the Arctic Ocean

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2020
We examine the regional variations and long‐term changes of the potential for snow‐ice formation for level Arctic sea ice from 1980 to 2016. We use daily sea ice motion data and implement a 1‐D snow/ice thermodynamic model that follows the ice ...

Rethinking ethanol separation in continuous spirit production from a process intensification perspective

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Technology &Biotechnology, EarlyView.
Abstract Continuous neutral‐alcohol and food‐grade ethanol production is an energy‐intensive process in which distillation and rectification alone account for 50–85% of total plant energy use. While significant advances in separation technology have emerged over the past two decades, the spirits industry continues to rely predominantly on multi‐effect ...

Assessment of Arctic sea ice and surface climate conditions in nine CMIP6 climate models

open access: yesArctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research, 2023
The observed retreat and anticipated further decline in Arctic sea ice holds strong climate, environmental, and societal implications. In predicting climate evolution, ensembles of coupled climate models have demonstrated appreciable accuracy in ...

Revealing Dust Source Changes in East Asia From Past to Future: An Interpretable Deep Learning Approach

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aeolian dust source areas are controlled by climate and human activities and are closely associated with land degradation, yet their long‐term evolution under global warming remains insufficiently quantified. An integrated framework that couples a U‐Net segmentation model with Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) was built to map and attribute

Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf cavity observations reveal multiyear sea ice dynamics and deepwater warming in Pine Island Bay, West Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science
Pine Island Bay (PIB), situated in the Amundsen Sea, is renowned for its retreating ice shelves and highly variable sea ice. While brine rejection from sea ice formation and glacial meltwater influence seawater properties, the downstream impacts beneath ...
