Impact of Microstructure on Solar Radiation Transfer Within Sea Ice During Summer in the Arctic: A Model Sensitivity Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
The recent rapid changes in Arctic sea ice have occurred not only in ice thickness and extent, but also in the microstructure of ice. To understand the role of microstructure on partitioning of incident solar shortwave radiation within the ice and upper ...

The Stepwise Reduction of Multiyear Sea Ice Area in the Arctic Ocean Since 1980

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2023
Abstract The loss of multiyear sea ice (MYI) in the Arctic Ocean is a significant change that affects all facets of the Arctic environment. Using a Lagrangian ice age product, we examine MYI loss and quantify the annual MYI area budget from 1980 to 2021 as the balance of export, melt, and replenishment.

Plant Trait‐ and Soil‐Mediated Responses of Herbaceous Aboveground Biomass Across Community Types Along a Degradation Gradient in the Desert Steppe

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, Volume 37, Issue 16, Page 11900-11911, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Grassland degradation profoundly alters the structure and function of desert steppe ecosystems. However, the responses of herbaceous aboveground biomass (Herb‐AGB) to degradation across different plant community types and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood.

Tuvaijuittuq: The Last Refuge of Multiyear Ice (MYI) Is Becoming Increasingly Open

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Tuvaijuittuq is currently the largest in a series of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Canadian Arctic. The remoteness, inaccessibility and paucity of environmental data creates challenges in understanding and establishing conservation management strategies of this unique multiyear ice (MYI)‐dominated region.

Circumpolar Effects of a Velocity‐Restoring Scheme for Antarctic Fast Ice on Shelf Waters and Ice Shelf Melt Simulated by NEMO4‐SI3

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Dense water formation in the Southern Ocean plays a key role in the global ocean overturning circulation, affecting the distribution of heat, carbon, oxygen, and nutrients. Fast ice stays immobile while blocking sea ice flow, favoring the opening of coastal polynyas, where intense air‐sea exchanges drive sea ice production and ocean ...

Distinct bacterial assemblages reside at different depths in Arctic multiyear sea ice [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Ecology, 2014
Bacterial communities in Arctic sea ice play an important role in the regulation of nutrient and energy dynamics in the Arctic Ocean. Sea ice has vertical gradients in temperature, brine salinity and volume, and light and UV levels. Multiyear ice (MYI) has at least two distinct ice layers: old fresh ice with limited permeability, and new saline ice ...

Sensitivity of CryoSat-2 Arctic sea-ice freeboard and thickness on radar-waveform interpretation [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2014
In the context of quantifying Arctic ice-volume decrease at global scale, the CryoSat-2 satellite was launched in 2010 and is equipped with the Ku band synthetic aperture radar altimeter SIRAL (Synthetic Aperture Interferometric Radar Altimeter), which ...

The Canadian Arctic as a Source of Trace Metals and Nutrients to the Atlantic Ocean: Fluxes Through Nares Strait, Lancaster Sound, Jones Sound, and Davis Strait

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract The Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) is a shallow conduit conveying Pacific‐ and Atlantic‐derived waters to Baffin Bay via Lancaster Sound, Jones Sound, and Nares Strait. At the southern edge of Baffin Bay, Davis Strait is a key gateway for exchange of Arctic modified water masses with the Labrador Sea and Atlantic Ocean.

Satellite‐observed drop of Arctic sea ice growth in winter 2015–2016

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2017
An anomalous warm winter 2015–2016 lead to the lowest winter ice extent and highlights the sensitivity of the Arctic sea ice. Here we use the 6 year record of an improved sea ice thickness product retrieved from data fusion of CryoSat‐2 radar altimetry ...

Can the Carbon Storage Function of a Degraded Mountain Wet Meadow Be Restored?

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Sierra Nevada meadows experienced intense livestock grazing in the 19th century, resulting in a shift from deep‐rooted highly productive perennial clonal sedges to short‐lived and shallow‐rooted plants. The current meadow vegetation contains >20% bare ground and <10% cover of highly productive clonal sedges and rushes. We hypothesized that the
