Regional analysis of spatiotemporal trends in Colorado potato beetle abundance

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Leveraging a large data set on Colorado potato beetles in Wisconsin, we examine spatial and temporal abundance trends. Spatiotemporal statistical models substantially improve fit and show that climate and management factors are positively associated with abundance levels.

Shape-constrained segmentation approach for arctic multiyear sea ice floe analysis [PDF]

open access: yes2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012
The melting of sea ice is correlated to increases in sea surface temperature and associated climatic changes. Therefore, it is important to investigate how rapidly sea ice floes melt. For this purpose, a new TempoSeg method for multitemporal segmentation of multiyear ice floes is proposed.

Persistence of seed‐applied pesticides in soybeans: environmental influences and implications for crop protection

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Early soybean planting in cool, wet soils slows emergence and results in about half the insecticide and fungicide concentrations at vegetative emergence compared with standard planting, where faster emergence maintains roughly double the pesticide concentrations, yet pesticide persistence remains similar across both planting dates.

Satellite-Based Identification and Characterization of Extreme Ice Features: Hummocks and Ice Islands

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
The satellite-based techniques for the monitoring of extreme ice features (EIFs) in the Canadian Arctic were investigated and demonstrated using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical data sources. The main EIF types include large ice islands

Historical remote sensing highlights long‐term persistence of Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) colonies

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Remote sensing can reveal population dynamics of Antarctic penguin colonies. In this study, we analyze emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) guano stains in remote sensing imagery and discover colony presence predating known records for 18 colonies across Antarctica.

Ensemble Kalman Filter Parameter Estimation of Ocean Optical Properties for Reduced Biases in a Coupled General Circulation Model

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2021
Coupled general circulation models (GCM), and their atmospheric, oceanic, land, and sea‐ice components have many parameters. Some parameters determine the numerics of the dynamical core, while others are based on our current understanding of the physical

Thickness‐Dependent Thermodynamic Responses of Arctic Sea Ice to Extratropical Cyclones Based on MOSAiC Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Extratropical cyclones strongly influence Arctic sea ice thermodynamics through episodic heat and moisture transport, yet their thickness‐dependent impacts remain poorly quantified. Using comprehensive observations from the Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC), we investigate how sea ice thickness ...

Topography-albedo feedback reinforces the transition to a younger Arctic ice pack

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Over the past few decades, the Arctic sea ice cover has rapidly shifted from consisting largely of thicker multiyear ice to predominantly thinner first-year ice. While ice-albedo feedback and reductions in overall ice extent have received a great deal of
