Nutritional Supplements to Increase Muscle Mass

Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, 1999
Although nutritional supplements purported to increase muscle mass are widely available at health food stores, gyms, by mail order, and over the Internet, many of these supplements have little or no data to support their claims. This article reviews the theory and research behind popular nutritional supplements commonly marketed as muscle mass builders.

Control of the Size of the Human Muscle Mass

Annual Review of Physiology, 2004
▪ Abstract  This review is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the cell and molecular biology of muscle in terms of growth and wasting and the second being an account of current knowledge of physiological mechanisms involved in the alteration of size of the human muscle mass.

Molecular mechanisms modulating muscle mass

Trends in Molecular Medicine, 2003
Skeletal muscle atrophy occurs in multiple clinical settings, including cancer, AIDS and sepsis, and is caused in part by an increase in the rate of ATP-dependent ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. The expression of two recently identified genes encoding ubiquitin-protein ligases, MAFbx/Atrogin-1 and MuRF1, has been shown to increase during muscle atrophy.

[Muscle fatigue. Metabolic changes in muscle mass].

Nordisk medicin, 1994
Strenuous physical activity results in depressed muscle function characterised by diminished force production, reduced speed and slowed relaxation. Studies of isolated muscle fibres have shown reduced force to be due to a combination of impaired cross-bridge function, reduced Ca(2+)-sensitivity and decreased Ca(2+)-release.
