TAK1 Regulates Skeletal Muscle Mass, Hypertrophic Signaling, and Metabolic Homeostasis in Male and Female Mice

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 10, 31 May 2026.
Targeted inactivation of TAK1 induces more rapid muscle atrophy in male mice compared to female mice. In addition, loss of TAK1 impairs mechanical overload–induced phosphorylation of p70S6K and rpS6, leading to blunted muscle hypertrophic growth. TAK1 inactivation also promotes lipid accumulation while reducing fatty acid metabolism in skeletal muscle ...

Diffusion‐Weighted Imaging for the Evaluation of the Sacroiliac Joint in Pediatric Patients

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Volume 78, Issue 5, Page 630-638, May 2026.
Objective Maturational signal in the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) of skeletally immature youth is often misinterpreted as inflammation. Diagnostic tools that improve specificity are greatly needed. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values from diffusion‐weighted imaging (DWI), when used with standard imaging, may enhance diagnostic accuracy.

Quantitative Muscle Magnetic Resonance Imaging Demonstrates Resolution of Muscle Edema in Refractory Dermatomyositis: A Post Hoc Analysis of a Proof‐of‐Concept Clinical Trial of Tofacitinib

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
Objective To evaluate changes in muscle edema using short‐tau inversion recovery (STIR) imaging and quantitative diffusion‐weighted imaging (DWI) with apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) mapping in patients with refractory dermatomyositis (DM) treated with tofacitinib. Methods This post hoc imaging analysis included patients from a 12‐week, open‐label

Health‐Related Behaviors Associated With Knee Pain Increase: A Longitudinal Community‐Based Cohort Study That Examines Osteoarthritis

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
Objectives To understand the impact of lifestyle changes on osteoarthritis outcomes during the COVID‐19 pandemic in a group of older Midwestern adults. Methods We conducted a cross‐sectional mailed survey in May of 2022 among participants of the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST) in participants that completed their prior clinic visit. We assessed

Immunosuppressive Medications and Nonserious Infections in People With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Prospective Cohort Study

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
Objective People with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at increased risk of serious infection, but less is known about nonserious infections. Our prospective cohort study evaluated associations between medications for RA and the risk of nonserious infections.

Quantification of Vascular Burden on Cranial Vessel Wall Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ophthalmic Complications in Giant Cell Arteritis

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
Objective There is a need for measures of disease severity for giant cell arteritis (GCA), which may enable identification of high‐risk subgroups (eg, ophthalmic complications) and individualized approaches to therapy. We derived a continuous score using data from cranial vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging (VW‐MRI) to quantify vascular burden in ...
