Mushroom toxins of the genusCortinarius
Experientia, 19843 major components of the toxic fungus Cortinarius speciosissimus have been isolated and their structures determined as cyclic polypeptides. 2 of these compounds have been shown in laboratory animals to cause nephrotoxicity characteristic of Cortinarius mushroom poisoning.

Phytotoxicity of orellanine, a mushroom toxin
Toxicon, 1987Orellanine, a toxic principle of Cortinarius orellanus Fr., efficiently inhibited the photosynthetic activity of duckweed, Lemna minor L., at a concentration of 0.4 mM. A lower concentration (0.06 mM) blocked the O2 production in isolated spinach class A chloroplasts.

Chemical Identification of the Amanita Toxin in Mushrooms
Science, 1955Folklore has provided many fanciful but dangerous procedures for distinguishing poisonous from nonpoisonous mushrooms: "A poisonous mushroom has a peculiar color or odor." "It will turn a silver coin black." "It has a devil's cup." Although these fallacious concepts have general popular acceptance, the mycologist depends upon complete botanical ...

Amaninamide, a new toxin ofAmanita virosa mushrooms
Experientia, 1980Amaninamide, a toxin closely related to the family of amatoxins, was found exclusively in Amanita virosa mushrooms. It differs from the well known toxin alpha-amanitin in that it lacks the 6'-hydroxyl group of the tryptophan unit, and from the toxin amanin found in Amanita phalloides by the presence of a carboxamide group instead of a carboxylic acid ...

MUSHROOM TOXINS AND CANCER (REVIEW)
International Journal of Oncology, 1995Significant advances have been made in recent years in cancer research concerning the chemistry and biological action of the various mushroom hydrazines and related chemicals as well as two mushrooms, Agaricus bisporus and Gyromitra esculenta. In addition, there is limited information involving the teratogenic effects of some of these mycotoxins. It is

The crystal structure of the mushroom toxin .beta.-amanitin
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 1977The crystal structure of the amatoxin ..beta..-amanitin, isolated and purified from American Amanita phalloides, was determined by x-ray crystallography. The results are reported. (JSR)

Membrane damage of liposomes by the mushroom toxin phallolysin
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1983We have investigated the membrane-damaging effect of phallolysin on liposomes varying in phospholipid composition, net charge and physical constitution. Liposomes were prepared from lipids extracted from bovine or human erythrocyte ghosts. The liposomes composed of bovine lipids (the intact cell showing little sensitivity to phallolysin) were found ...

The biological kingdom of the fungi contains many toxigenic species. Unlike many of the microorganisms of food safety concern, the fungi can be macroscopic, colorful, and, in this author’s opinion, beautiful and endlessly fascinating to observe. This chapter discusses species that pose the most significant food safety risks.

Mushroom toxins yield to analysis
Chemical & Engineering News Archive, 1980Mushrooms deserve their notoriety for producing peculiar poisons. Recently, several previously undescribed mushroom toxins, including one family of compounds that's not dangerous to man and another compound that caused a small outbreak of poisonings and several fatalities in Poland during the 1950's, have yielded to chemical analysis.

Conformation of the mushroom toxin β-amanitin in the crystalline state
Biochemistry, 1978A single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of beta-amanitin, a bicyclic octapeptide toxin isolated from the poisonous mushroom Amanita phalloides, shows that the molecule has distinct regions of hydrophilic and hydrophobic residues and two 18-membered rings. The study confirms the proposed chemical sequence and the configuration of the residues.
