Microbiological profile of tubercular and nontubercular empyemas and its impact on clinical outcomes: A retrospective analysis of 285 consecutively operated cases

open access: yesLung India, 2020
Background: Empyema thoracis is an entity seen across all age groups. This study aims at reporting a detailed microbiological profile of “pus and pleural tissue” in patients operated for empyema thoracis and also correlating it with perioperative ...

Advancing Therapies for Mycobacterial Diseases: From Small Molecules to Host‐Directed Strategies

open access: yesMedicinal Research Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The global burden of multidrug‐resistant tuberculosis (MDR‐TB) and the rising incidence of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections highlight the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies. Current treatments are prolonged, toxic, and increasingly compromised by resistance and limited diagnostic capacity.

Culture at High Density Improves the Ability of Human Macrophages to Control Mycobacterial Growth

open access: yes, 2001
International audienceThe mechanisms through which granuloma formation helps control mycobacterial infection are poorly understood, but it is possible that the accumulation of macrophages at high density at sites of infection promotes the differentiation

Precision immunomodulation for pediatric hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in intensive care

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
This review presents a bedside framework for recognizing pediatric hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and cytokine storm, stabilizing organ dysfunction, identifying the underlying phenotype, selecting targeted immunomodulation, considering extracorporeal adjuncts, and reassessing response within 24–72 h. ABSTRACT Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

Case series: Kikuchi‐Fujimoto disease with diagnostic overlap

open access: yesRheumatology &Autoimmunity, EarlyView.
Kikuchi‐Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, self‐limiting necrotizing lymphadenitis that poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its overlap with tuberculosis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and malignancy. We present four cases highlighting distinct diagnostic complexities: KFD mimicking tuberculosis with concomitant latent TB infection and ...

Diagnostic accuracy of chip hybridization from formalin-fixed paraffin embedded bioptic specimens in a cohort with predominantly extrapulmonary mycobacterial disease

open access: yesBMC Microbiology
Introduction Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease remain a diagnostic challenge and conventional methods such as mycobacterial culture or molecular methods (e.g.

Mycobacterium intracellulare M.i.198—A Promising Strain for Studying Pathogenesis of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Pulmonary Disease (NTM‐PD)

open access: yesMicrobiology and Immunology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this review, we introduce a promising strain for studying pathogenesis of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM‐PD), Mycobacterium intracellulare M.i.198. M.i.198 was isolated from a patient with progressive Mycobacterium avium‐intracellulare complex pulmonary disease (MAC‐PD) in whom surgical operation was required to ...

Identification and characterisation of endogenous inducible promoters in Mycobacterium tuberculosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
PhDMycobacterium tuberculosis is one of the world’s most devastating pathogens. Despite completion of the genome sequence in 1998, research progress has been hampered by a lack of genetic tools and the difficulty of working with the organism. Existing

Pathogen‐Specific Bloodstream Infections Associated With Tumour Necrosis Factor‐α Inhibitors, Vedolizumab and Ustekinumab in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Danish Nationwide Case‐Control Study 2010–2024

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
In this nationwide study of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, TNF inhibitor use was associated with higher bloodstream infection rates, whereas vedolizumab and ustekinumab was not. Associations differed by pathogen species, and concomitant glucocorticoid use was associated with higher infection rates.

Delay of phagosome maturation by a mycobacterial lipid is reversed by nitric oxide.

open access: yes, 2008
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a facultative intracellular pathogen that inhibits phagosome maturation in macrophages thereby securing survival and growth.
