Myelin basic protein and the sability of the multilamellat myelin structure

A purified myelin fraction was prepared from myelin deficient (mld) mutant mice and normal littermates (20 to 25 days old). Mld brains contained only 5% of the amount of myelin present in controls. Myelin isolated from mld brains had a normal lipid and protein content. The lipid composition of mld myelin was also normal.

In vitro carboxymethylation of myelin basic protein

During a study to find natural substrate proteins of carboxymethylation, myelin basic protein was found to be a good substrate. The two protein carboxymethylases were purified partially using myelin basic protein as a substrate. These two enzymes may be identical with protein carboxymethylase I and II, which have been found to methylate gamma-globulin.

Abstract Isolated rat brain myelin when incubated with γ 32 P labelled ATP yields proteins bearing acid labile, base stable phosphoryl groups. Phosphorylated myelin basic protein can be isolated and degraded with trypsin and pronase to yield principally phosphoarginine and phosphohistidine.
