A Partial C4 Photosynthetic Biochemical Pathway in Rice
Introduction of a C4 photosynthetic pathway into C3 rice (Oryza sativa) requires installation of a biochemical pump that concentrates CO2 at the site of carboxylation in modified bundle sheath cells. To investigate the feasibility of this, we generated a

Relationships Between C4 Enzyme Activities and Yield in Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)
To study the relationships between C4 enzyme activities and yield, C4 enzyme activities (phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase), NADP-malate dehydrogenase (NADP-MDH), NADP-malic enzyme (NADP-ME), and pyruvate phosphate dikinase (PPDK)) in different ...

Kinetic and Structural Properties of NADP-Malic Enzyme from Sugarcane Leaves [PDF]
Oligomeric structure and kinetic properties of NADP-malic enzyme, purified from sugarcane (Saccharam officinarum L.) leaves, were determined at either pH 7.0 and 8.0. Size exclusion chromatography showed the existence of an equilibrium between the dimeric and the tetrameric forms.

Structural characteristics of the nonallosteric human cytosolic malic enzyme
Human cytosolic NADP(+)-dependent malic enzyme (c-NADP-ME) is neither a cooperative nor an allosteric enzyme, whereas mitochondrial NAD(P)(+)-dependent malic enzyme (m-NAD(P)-ME) is allosterically activated by fumarate.

Evolutionary Convergence of C4 Photosynthesis: A Case Study in the Nyctaginaceae
C4 photosynthesis evolved over 65 times, with around 24 origins in the eudicot order Caryophyllales. In the Caryophyllales family Nyctaginaceae, the C4 pathway is known in three genera of the tribe Nyctagineae: Allionia, Okenia and Boerhavia ...

The enzyme kinetics of the NADP-malic enzyme from tobacco leaves [PDF]
Malic enzyme (L-malate: NADP + oxidoreductase (oxaloacetate-decarboxylating), EC 1.1.1.40, NADP-ME), which was found in chloroplasts, was isolated from tobacco leaves (Nicotiana tabacum L.) almost homogenous.

Pyruvate cycling has been implicated in glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) from pancreatic beta-cells. The operation of some pyruvate cycling pathways is proposed to necessitate malate export from the mitochondria and NADP(+)-dependent ...

Crystal Packing of Protomers Provides a Valuable Structural Insight into Protein Structure
The crystal structure of proteins is generally considered static due to the constraints imposed by crystal packing. We determined the crystal structure of rice NADP-malic enzyme 2 (OsNADP-ME2), an oxidative decarboxylase that converts malic acid to ...

The roles of organic acids in C4 photosynthesis
Organic acids are involved in numerous metabolic pathways in all plants. The finding that some plants, known as C4 plants, have four-carbon dicarboxylic acids as the first product of carbon fixation showed these organic acids play essential roles as ...
