The Naked Mole Rat and Selenium
2016The naked mole rat, Heterocephalus glaber, has emerged as a popular model organism for studying aging, hypoxia tolerance and cancer resistance. The sequencing of its genome and transcriptome allowed researchers to get insights into the associated molecular mechanisms, pathways and gene networks.

Pup Shoving by Adult Naked Mole‐Rats
Ethology, 2002AbstractAdult naked mole‐rats (Heterocephalus glaber) characteristically perform an unusual behavior toward young: they shove small pups frequently and vigorously around the nest. We studied 15 litters in five captive colonies to quantify which adults shove pups, changes in shoving frequencies as pups develop, how external disturbances affect pup ...

Naked mole-rats: at the heart of it
Trends in Molecular MedicineFaulkes et al. recently showed that naked mole-rats (NMRs) have a very distinctive cardiac gene expression profile among other African mole-rats, as well as metabolic variations that result from their chronic exposure to a hypoxic environment. These adaptations might underlie their resistance to cardiac ischemic injuries.

Extraordinary creatures: naked mole rats
Journal of Experimental BiologyNaked mole rats (Heterocephalus glaber) are small (35–45 g) rodents from East Africa that live communally in burrows that can extend over 3 km and reach 2 m deep. The animals lack a fur coat and regulate their body temperature poorly. They are one of only two species of eusocial mammal and colonies in the wild can reach 300 individuals but more usually
