Microplastic and nanoplastic debris left behind by a plastic water tank subjected to a mimicked bushfire

open access: yesEngineering Reports
Little is known about the catastrophic bushfire from a micro‐pollution point of view, and there is also very limited understanding of the emerging contamination of microplastics and nanoplastics. Upon exposure to fire, plastic items, such as water tanks,

Assessing the Biodistribution and Toxicity of Fluorescently Dyed Nano-Polystyrene in Artemia salina Nauplii

open access: yesPollutants
Plastic pollution is a growing environmental crisis, with millions of tons of plastic entering the ocean each year and breaking down into microplastics and nanoplastics.

Progress in Biodegradable Nonwoven Materials for Personal Protective Applications

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Personal protective equipment generates large waste streams, underscoring the need for materials that deliver protection without persistent environmental costs. This study reviews biodegradable nonwoven options and relates material choice and disposal routes to barrier performance, comfort, and footprint.

Performance and UV‐Induced Microplastics Formation in a PBS/PBAT Blend With and Without Joncryl Reactive Compatibilization

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 8, August 2026.
This paper aims to examine the biodegradable PBS/PBAT blend with and without the addition of a reactive compatibilizer. The aim of this study is to assess the role of the compatibilizer in the generation of microplastics (MPs) from the biodegradable PBS/PBAT blend after UV‐induced ageing and to provide useful insights for their potential application ...

Interfacial Regulation–Driven Dual‐Enrichment SERS Coupled With Deep Learning Enable Ultrasensitive and In Situ Identification of Microplastics in Natural Waters

open access: yesSmall, Volume 22, Issue 44, 7 August 2026.
A membrane‐confined SERS platform constructs a dense network of vertical hotspots using PSS‐Na‐modified Au@Ag nanocubes for sensitive and reproducible microplastic detection in complex environmental water matrices. Coupled with an attention‐based 1D‐CNN, it enables accurate polymer identification and semi‐quantitative mixture prediction for intelligent

What if you eat nanoplastics? Simulating nanoplastics fate during gastrointestinal digestion

open access: yesChemosphere
Despite our growing awareness of micro-and nanoplastics presence in food and beverages, the fate of nanoplastics (NPs) in the human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) remains poorly investigated. Changes of nanoplastics size upon digestive conditions influence the potential of absorption through the intestine.

Efficient Trapping and Degradation of Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanoplastics Using Enzyme‐Functionalized Bowl‐Shaped Janus Particles

open access: yesSmall Structures, Volume 7, Issue 8, August 2026.
A “capture‐and‐degrade” strategy is developed using enzyme‐functionalized bowl‐shaped Janus particles for efficient removal of PET nanoplastics. The hydrophobic concave cavity enables selective trapping of nanoparticles, while immobilized HotPETase‐LCI promotes in situ degradation.

Microplastics Toxicity and Life‐Threatening Impact on the Arabian Gulf: A Critical Review

open access: yesEnvironmental Quality Management, Volume 36, Issue 2, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a pervasive pollutant in marine environments worldwide, yet the Arabian Gulf remains underrepresented in global assessments despite its ecological and economic significance. The estimated mass of MPs entering the water of the Gulf ranged from 155 to 413.4 kt per year.

Environmentally relevant aged nanoplastics amplify oxidative stress–associated inhalation toxicity and delay lung clearance

open access: yesRedox Biology
Airborne micro- and nanoplastics are emerging environmental contaminants of increasing concern, yet their inhalation toxicity and pulmonary fate remain insufficiently understood.
