Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Assessing agreement between malaria slide density readings. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Several criteria have been used to assess agreement between replicate slide readings of malaria parasite density. Such criteria may be based on percent difference, or absolute difference, or a combination.

Acute caffeine treatment protects the developing retina from ischemia‐induced cell death
Caffeine reduces cell death in the developing retina under ischemia (OGD). This effect does not involve BDNF upregulation or antioxidant pathways (NRF2/VEGF). Neuroprotection occurs mainly through adenosine A2A receptor antagonism, decreasing glutamate release and excitotoxicity, highlighting caffeine's potential as an acute neuroprotective agent in ...

Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

The impact of herbivores on the natural regeneration of temperate deciduous woodland [PDF]
Many studies have reported deficient or intermittent patterns of natural regeneration in temperate deciduous woodland. The present study aimed to assess the relative impact of herbivore-mediated plant mortality on the natural regeneration dynamics of ...

Asymptotic $ψ$-densities of subsets of natural numbers
The sizes of subsets of the natural numbers are typically quantified in terms of asymptotic (linear) and logarithmic densities. These concepts have been generalized to weighted $w$-densities, where a specific weight function $w$ plays a key role. In this paper, a parallel theory of asymptotic $ψ$-densities is introduced, where the weight is expressed ...

Texture density aftereffects in the perception of artificial and natural textures
Three experiments are reported concerning the texture density aftereffect. The experiments address the question of how visual texture density information is encoded by examining patterns of transfer between different textures. In the first two experiments, it is shown that manipulation of spatial frequency and orientation information does not affect ...

Versatile vector tools for efficient protein screening across multiple expression systems
A unified vector toolkit enables rapid protein expression screening across E. coli, insect, and mammalian cells. A single primer pair amplifies the target gene, which is inserted into any vector via a standardized interface. This streamlined workflow eliminates repeated cloning steps, accelerating the identification of optimal expression conditions for

Radial variation of fiber dimenstions, annual ring width, and wood density from natural and plantation trees of Alder (Alnus glutinosa) wood [PDF]
The aim of this research was to determine radial variations of some wood properties from natural and plantation trees of Alnus glutinosa. Oven-dried wood density (WD), fiber cell features, and annual ring width (ARW) were determined in radial positions ...
