A physical model for widespread near‐surface and fault zone damage induced by earthquakes
I present a rigorous unifying interpretation of the well‐documented widespread near‐surface and fault zone damage induced by earthquakes by simulating three‐dimensional dynamic rupture propagation on a vertical strike‐slip fault.

Primary and secondary surface deformation related to the 2001 Bhuj-Kachchh earthquake suggests that thrusting movement took place along an E-W fault near the western extension of the South Wagad Fault, a synthetic fault of the Kachchh Mainland ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A Study on the Sloshing Problem of Vertical Storage Tanks under the Action of Near-Fault Earthquakes
In this study, through a vibration table test, finite element simulation, and research on the rationality of the wave-height fortification of national storage tank specifications, the sloshing response of vertical storage tanks under the action of near ...

Refining the shallow slip deficit [PDF]
Geodetic slip inversions for three major (M_w > 7) strike-slip earthquakes (1992 Landers, 1999 Hector Mine and 2010 El Mayor–Cucapah) show a 15–60 per cent reduction in slip near the surface (depth < 2 km) relative to the slip at deeper depths (4–6 km ...

This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

First AUV and ROV investigation of seismogenic faults in the Alboran Sea (Western Meditarranean) [PDF]
In May-June 2015 we carried out the SHAKE cruise on board the RV “Sarmiento de Gamboa” the first in situ investigation using state-of-the-art underwater vehicles, the AUVs “AsterX” and “IdefX” (IFREMER, France) and the ROV “Max Rover” (HCMR, Greece ...

Deep ductile shear localization facilitates near-orthogonal strike-slip faulting in a thin brittle lithosphere [PDF]
Some active fault systems comprise near-orthogonal conjugate strike-slip faults, as highlighted by the 2019 Ridgecrest and the 2012 Indian Ocean earthquake sequences.

Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Estimation of Near-Fault Strong Ground-Motion
Accumulated data of strong ground motions have been providing us very important knowledge about rupture processes of earthquakes, propagation-path, site-amplification effects on ground motion, the relation between ground motion and damage... However, most of the ground motion databases used in the development of ground motion prediction models are ...
