Hereditary neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (clinical case) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of rare hereditary progressive diseases of the central nervous system with a pronounced accumulation of iron in the basal ganglia and a characteristic ...

Multi‐Targeting Ligands as Prospective Therapeutics for Alzheimer's Disease, a Prevalent Neurodegenerative Disorder: Mechanistic Insights, Emerging Targets and Drug Discovery Campaigns

open access: yesMedicinal Research Reviews, Volume 46, Issue 4, Page 1173-1229, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative condition characterized by progressive cognitive impairment, memory deterioration, and neuronal dysfunction. Its complex pathophysiology involves multiple interlinked processes, including amyloid‐β (Aβ) aggregation, tau hyperphosphorylation, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation ...

Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation.

open access: yesFolia neuropathologica, 2006
Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) describes a group of progressive extrapyramidal disorders with radiographic evidence of focal iron accumulation in the brain, usually in the basal ganglia. Patients previously diagnosed with Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome fall into this category.

Evaluation of Enzyme Inhibition and Kinetic Profiles of Origanum Essential Oils on Metabolic and Central Nervous System Targets

open access: yesNatural Sciences, Volume 6, Issue 3, July 2026.
The essential oils of three Origanum species were chemically characterized and evaluated for their antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities. The different compositions confer selective bioactivities: O. vulgare exhibits good antioxidant and α‐glucosidase inhibitory activity, O. majorana shows promising tyrosinase inhibition, and O.

Amyloid‐β aggregates induce vasculopathy via ferroptosis in brain endothelial cells

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 36, Issue 4, July 2026.
Blood–brain barrier (BBB) disruption is evident in brains with amyloidopathy. In this study, we demonstrate that amyloid β (Aβ) drives abnormal lipid metabolism and lipid droplet formation in brain endothelial cells, leading to lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis.

Chapter 11 - Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation

open access: yes, 2018
Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) describes a heterogeneous group of inherited rare clinical and genetic entities. Clinical core symptoms comprise a combination of early-onset dystonia, pyramidal and extrapyramidal signs with ataxia ...

Lipid Dynamics in the Amyloid Cascade Hypothesis: Evaluating the Biological Relevance of In Vitro Models

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 11, 15 June 2026.
This review reconsiders the amyloid cascade by placing lipid dynamics at its core. It shows that free lipids, governed by critical micellar concentration, act as pathological chaperones that redirect amyloid aggregation toward membrane‐damaging species.
