Neuroprotection and Neurodegenerative Disease
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2002This paper will focus on commonalities in the aetiology and pathology in five areas of neurological disease with illustrative examples of therapy. Possibilities of multimodal and neuroprotective therapies in human disease, employing currently available drugs and showing evidence of neuroprotective potential in animal models, are discussed.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are growing in frequency and represent a major threat to public health. Advances in scientific progress have made it clear that NDDs share many underlying processes, including shared intracellular mechanisms such as protein misfolding and aggregation, cell-to-cell prion-like spread, growth factor signaling ...

In the past few decades, a tremendous amount of effort has been invested in developing gene and cell therapies for inherited genetic diseases such as Huntington's disease (HD). However, progress in their clinical application has been very limited. One of the major barriers is the lack of appropriate animal models that allow precise prediction patterns ...

Neurodegenerative diseases are sporadic and rare hereditary disorders of the central nervous system, which cause a slowly progressive loss of function of specific neuron populations and their connections. Severe impairments and care dependency can be the sequelae.
