Gut–Brain Axis Modulation by Short‐Chain Fatty Acids Exerts Disease‐Modifying Effects in a Murine Model of Drug‐Resistant Epilepsy

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Drug‐resistant epilepsy (DRE) remains a clinical challenge, as therapies modifying disease trajectory are lacking. Increasing evidence implicates gut microbiota dysbiosis in epilepsy pathophysiology, with short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) emerging as key microbial metabolites with neuroprotective and anti‐inflammatory properties.

Neurobarrier Coupling in the Brain: A Partner of Neurovascular and Neurometabolic Coupling? [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism, 2005
Neurovascular and neurometabolic coupling help the brain to maintain an appropriate energy flow to the neural tissue under conditions of increased neuronal activity. Both coupling phenomena provide us, in addition, with two macroscopically measurable parameters, blood flow and intermediate metabolite fluxes, that are used to dynamically image the ...

Ictal but not interictal epileptic discharges activate astrocyte endfeet and elicit cerebral arteriole responses.

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2011
Activation of astrocytes by neuronal signals plays a central role in the control of neuronal activity-dependent blood flow changes in the normal brain.

Proinflammatory Epstein–Barr Virus Antibody Functions Track with Disease Activity in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Elevated immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers against EBV nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1) represent the most consistent serological marker of MS risk, with levels remaining persistently elevated following disease onset.

The petrotympanic canal (Huguier canal): Evolutionary, anatomical, and medical perspectives

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The petrotympanic canal, traditionally referred to as Civinini's or Huguier's canal, represents an anatomical passage connecting the middle ear and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Despite its early description, its structural complexity and functional significance have often been underestimated. In this study, we combined historical, anatomical,

Innervation of the tubarial glands: A hypothesis‐driven anatomical review

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The tubarial glands have been described as a macroscopic bilateral glandular complex in the posterolateral nasopharynx near the torus tubarius and the pharyngeal opening of the Eustachian tube. Since their recognition on prostate‐specific membrane antigen‐based imaging, their anatomical classification has remained debated, with converging ...

A time-synchronized multimodal monitoring system for general anesthesia

open access: yesMedicine in Novel Technology and Devices
In clinical settings, different kinds of patient monitoring systems and depth of anesthesia monitoring (DoA) systems have been widely used to assess the depth of sedation and patient's state.

Arthroscopic Latarjet Using a 3 Anterior Portal Technique

open access: yesArthroscopy Techniques, EarlyView.
Abstract Arthroscopic Latarjet is technically challenging with a steep learning curve. Several limitations include the risk of malposition of the coracoid bone block, the risk of screw fixation, such as hardware failure and irritation, and the risk of neurological injury.
